Cheap Thrills: Christopher’s Post-Summer Slip-Ons

Sperry Top-Sider for J. Crew Wool Slip-On

Living in Southern California, summertime stays with us long after the rest of the country has started cozying up to fall and the great sweaters, corduroys and flannels that come with it. But just because the weather isn’t dipping below 70 degrees anytime soon doesn’t mean that we can’t start prepping for the chill of fall and the red cups at Starbucks. So as soon as September hits, I’ll be swapping out my favorite boat shoes for these Sperry Top-Sider for J. Crew Slip On Sneakers ($70).

Slip on sneakers have been a staple for Southern Californians ever since I was born — I’ve had checkerboard and leather versions ever since I could walk — but this season, the trend has hit full saturation with huge names such as Céline and Isabel Marant giving high fashion spins on the shoe as well as regular ol’ shoe labels such as Steve Madden and Aldo giving shoppers a more wallet-friendly version. But instead of the cobalt pony (thanks, Phoebe Philo!) and the perforated leather (courtesy the OG, Vans), fall calls for something a little bit cozier, even if we’ll be pairing these wool sneakers with shorts for a few more weeks. The classic slip-on silhouette gets a luxe upgrade with Sperry Top-Sider’s tonal wool, and the style is available in monochromatic grey (pictured above) as well as a deeper navy and grey. We’re opting to go a little lighter, because after all, we’re really only playing dress up when fall hits our shores. We’ll leave the real bundling up to the pros.

Available at J. Crew.
