Dana Lorenza

We’ll be the first to admit that we’re slightly obsessed with Dana Lorenz and her duo of labels, Fenton and Fallon. Not only is her highly covetable jewelry always on our minds when we’re looking to add some glam to an outfit (Michelle Obama is a fan of her work and Jenna Lyon is too, having collaborated with Lorenz for a limited edition capsule collection for J. Crew), we can’t get enough of her Instagram account — which is heavy on her two longhaired dachshunds — and her endearing charm in the Vogue/CFDA documentary The Fashion Fund. But it’s all about the jewelry for the designer, who is taking her first foray into the world of fine jewelry with a collection for Plukka.

For those in the know, Plukka is an online source for jewelry that eschews retail tradition. Instead of brick and mortar stores, Plukka is entirely digital. And instead of keeping actual stock of each piece of jewelry, every single item is actually made to order. What does that mean? First, it means Plukka can keep costs down, and second, it means designers such as Lorenz have free reign to create whatever they want without having to be strictly commercial.

In her collection for Plukka, Lorenz’s love of hard-edged glam comes into play on a sapphire and spinel pavé spike link bracelet ($7,500), which is something we’d expect to see in her main lines (only without the precious gems). And in an example of how Plukka’s business model allows for more creative freedom, check out the white sapphire pavé biker chain necklace ($5,500) or the rutilated quartz, lapis and citrine drop earrings ($3,500). Each one takes signature Fenton and Fallon looks — spikes, chains, statement proportions — and adds glam touches with real gems, more over-the-top embellishment and fashion-forward styling.

Before you balk at the high price tags, consider that this is Lorenz’s first-ever collection of fine jewelry, which sets her apart from her peers on the sales floor at Bergdorf Goodman (think Ippolyta and John Hardy) and thrusts her into the spheres of Cartier, Mikimoto and the like — only we can’t imagine anyone but the chicest grannies clutching their Dana Lorenz for Plukka spikes. And for big rocks such as these, you could consider yourself getting a made-to-order bargain. And for a true Lorenz look, layer these pieces with your Fenton and Fallon standbys for the ultimate layered, high-low mix.
