Outfit Inspiration: Elizabeth Banks’ Floral Suit

Elizabeth Banks isn’t known for pushing the fashion envelope — her Hunger Games character, Effie Trinket, on the other hand… — but lately, we’ve seen her shift from run-of-the-mill red carpet fare to more fashion-forward picks. Case in point: the actress’ Chloé suit at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Banks was premiering her film Love and Mercy. Florals are a springtime staple, but many designers are carrying the pattern into fall with new palettes and unexpected prints and we think it’s a great way to add a little bit of freshness to a season dominated by heavy fabrics and serious patterns such as plaid and houndstooth.

Banks’ Chloé suit also illustrates a few of fall’s other prominent trends, including the crop top — it’s not going anywhere, so get those crunches in! — and a looser, more casual take on tailoring. The suit not only boasts the bold pattern, but a tied waistband, a high rise and an all around slouchier fit. The jacket is cropped and sweet, all the better to play with the proportion of the high-waisted pant. And while head-to-toe florals might be too bold a statement for every day, we think it’s a fun and fashion-forward way to welcome the new season.

A bolder, darker floral is something that many of us will feel more comfortable wearing than a white abstract print. The Ted Baker London Opulent Bloom Jacket ($325) might not have the same colors as Banks’ Chloé creation, but it’s still got plenty of impact thanks to the allover botanical print. It’s tailored slim and lean, giving the print all of the spotlight.

If you’re not keen on looking like you’re wearing a greenhouse, keep the pieces separate and wear the blazer with your favorite jeans or leather leggings. It’s sure to be a piece you come back to again and again — just wait for the compliments to roll in, trust us.

1. Complete the floral suit look with the Ted Baker Opulent Bloom Trouser ($225). It’s a big style risk, but trust us, it’ll pay off in spades. Plus, feel free to wear the suit separates as separates.

2. For a crop top that doesn’t bare it all, try the A.L.C. Nat Top ($265), with a high neckline and a subtle wrap detail.

3. The Ash Domino Stud Clutch ($245) is a relaxed take on the red carpet’s standard rhinestone clutch.

4. And while basic black pumps will do the job, there’s no reason to miss out on any cheeky fun. Try the Sergio Rossi Butterfly Heel Suede Platform Pump ($1,055)  to add that extra bit of whimsy.
