Just when we thought that holiday dressing was all about jewel tones and working with pieces that can go from the board room to the after-dark bash, Chanel Iman shows us that sometimes, it’s more about simplicity than showing off. Her monochromatic dress, shoe and bag were stunning thanks to a huge helping of detail and texture (the red lip doesn’t hurt when you’re trying to make things a little more festive). So while we you don’t always have time to go home and change out of something you spent all day at work in, when you do, think about going glam by letting the details of your outfit shine.

An all-black outfit doesn’t sound like an obvious choice for a holiday soirée, but trust us, our combo of lace, feathers and leather is anything but somber. Add a clutch that you’ve already got in your closet — be it an on-trend envelope clutch or a more glam minaudiere — and you’ve got a party look that’ll steal the spotlight from all those ironically ugly sweaters and shiny satin sheaths.

Yes, it’s a splurge, but if you’re going to get an evening bag, it might as well be something you can use even when it’s light out. Plus, the Saint Laurent Cassandre Clutch ($995) is one of the only things left from the brand that still bears its pre-Slimane logo. Shiny patent leather, a simple shape and that classic YSL emblem come together for something you’ll be proud to carry, not just something you have to carry because you’re going to a special occasion. It’s big enough to hold your essentials but not big enough to look like those oversized clutches from seasons past, so while we’re all about staying on trend, we’re also encouraging this investment.

1. So the biggest pieces of your outfit are all black, but that doesn’t mean that you’re all boring. We’ve mixed up textures, shapes and materials so that there’s plenty of detail no matter where you look. The Sabine Feather Skirt ($98) is definitely eye-catching and it takes a lot of guts to wear a fully feathered skirt, but no matter how you move, the floating feathers on this skirt will catch the attention of everyone in the room.

2. When your skirt is the center of attention, keep everything else simple. The Ramona Leather Sleeve Knit ($119.50) might look like a simple t-shirt at first glance, but take a closer look at the leather detailing and you’ll see why it’s one of the season’s most popular pieces at Club Monaco. Not only is it party-ready, pair it with denim for a casual weekend look and a pencil skirt at work when you’re out of things to wear.

3. What’s the one black thing you can wear day in and day out? That would be our new favorite mascara, Benefit’s They’re Real ($23). We’ve tried to find a fault with this formula — nothing can be perfect, can it? — but when a mascara offers the combination of sky-high lashes, pumped up volume, a non-flaking formula and is easy to take off, even after a few hot toddies, this is as close to perfect as it gets.

4. It’s clear to us that one big statement-making piece of bling is all you need when it’s this good. The J. Crew Jeweled Cuff ($125) looks like something completely one-of-a-kind. Lucite isn’t just for questionable shoes on questionable girls, because it’s also the perfect backdrop for clusters of gems and pyramid spikes on this tough-girl goes glam showstopper.

5. The finishing touch? Thank the impeccable style of Mrs. Ivanka Trump, because her lace Derry Bootie ($149.50) offers just the right amount of detail to finish off an outfit that’s so rich in unexpected touches. Sure, a nude shoe or a simple black pump would work, but a touch of lace is that extra detail that sets the girls like fashion apart from the girls that love it.
