Puttin’ on the Spritz: Perfumed Jewelry Brings Back ’90s Nostalgia

Back in junior high, one of the very first presents I ever bought my best friend was a vial of perfume on a chain. (We’re still friends to this day, which I attribute to my gift-giving abilities.). It was from the super-saccharin Delia’s catalog, which is still around today — if you can believe it. And while she hasn’t worn the necklace in over a decade, we did spy it in her jewelry box last time we rummaged through it. It was a novel idea then, being able to touch up your scent on the go via a cute accessory, but now a host of brands are bringing the world of jewelry and perfume together again, giving scent fanatics a reason to head to the jewelry counter for their latest fix. And you don’t have to be a pre-teen now to get in on the action!

With the Pomander necklace ($29.99), jewelry subscription service Jewelmint lets you customize your scented statement necklace by allowing you to use your own scent. The little perforated ball (it opens and closes with a petite magnetic closure) holds a tiny piece of cotton that you spray with your signature eau. It’s a customer favorite, and while it often sells out, it comes back again to wide acclaim (Check the brand’s site and Twitter feed to find out when it gets restocked). The piece is based on a vintage bauble in Kate Bosworth’s own collection, but Cher Coulter, who designed the piece, made it easier to use and suggests that instead of your own perfume, you spritz a bit of cotton with a boyfriend or husband’s scent, letting you catch of whiff of your beloved all day long.

If you’re less bohemian and more of a traditionalist, the Chloé solid perfume locket takes a classic jewelry motif, the locket, and infuses it with the brand’s cult-favorite perfume. Last year’s silver locket (pictured left and filled with Shirley, a variation of the classic Chloé Eau de Parfum) sold out just in a few weeks, so be ready to snatch up Bianca, this year’s offering. The subtly engraved and soft peach colored locket — you recognize it from Chloé’s shopping bags — opens to reveal a solid perfume, so you can touch up your scent throughout the day by rubbing a bit on your pulse points. And since it’s a brand known for embracing feminine details and celebrating all things girly, you’re encouraged to slide in a photo after the perfume’s been used. It keeps your perfume and your loved ones close to your heart.

After her husband Dustin gave her a Tom Binns piece for her birthday, perfumer Lisa Hoffman was hooked. What started out as just one piece from the rebel jeweler became an entire collection of screw cuffs, safety pin earrings and more. Now the duo has come together for a collaboration that takes Hoffman’s signature scents and captures them, literally, in one of Binns’ creations. The necklaces, bangles and more (earrings will be available in 2013 and pieces range from $200-300) are available in five different metals (bronze, brushed gold, rose gold, shiny gold, and rhodium) and five different scents.

The shape of the pieces is inspired by the shape of seed pods found on plants and trees. Hoffman’s fragrances, which include French Clary Sage, Tunisian Neroli and more run the gamut from fresh and light to heady and sexy. Hoffman designed the pieces as a way to wear fragrance when you want, allowing those who wear her jewelry to remove it (and thus, remove their scent) when they’re at the gym or around individuals who are sensitive to scent and then put it back on later. The wooden balls, which are made from wood flour — a derivative of agricultural practices — that fill the necklace are imbued with the scent and let you catch a whiff long after any liquid perfume would last. They’re refillable, so you can swap out your scent any time the mood strikes.

The Maison Francis Kurkdjian has made a name for itself by utilizing scent in off-kilter ways. When you create some of the world’s most recognizable and best-selling fragrances such as Gaultier’s Le Male, you’ve earned some artistic leeway in your own eponymous line. Sure, Kurkdjian offers traditional sprays and candles, but the label started off making luxe, scented fabric softeners and scented bubble solution. They also offer incense paper, which fills a room with scent and swirls of delicate smoke, giving the brand’s classic scents a deeper, richer dimension. If you want to wear the scent without spraying, however, wrap one of the brand’s scented leather bracelets around your wrist and you’ll catch a bit of fragrance every time you wave or make any move with your hands. Inspired by traditional glove-making, which involves dousing leather in perfumed oils to get rid of the smells from the tannery, each bracelet is soaked in essential oils and allowed to air dry. The scent lasts several weeks, but you can keep wearing the bracelet long after the scent fades.
