Ralph Lauren’s Ricky Bag Gets Injected with Tech

Whether it’s Google Glass or the proliferation of smart watches that are flooding the market, fashion tech has leaned heavily on tech and not so much on fashion. And even with big names such as Diane von Furstenberg, Opening Ceremony, Tory Burch and Michael Bastian behind the creative side, it seems that integrating screens, data collection and more gets in the way of something you’d actually want to wear. Well, leave it to the master himself to integrate tech into a piece you’ll be proud to tote. Ralph Lauren, the stalwart of American luxury, is debuting the Ricky Bag with Light, a riff on his classic handbag with a built-in LED light and a charging cord.

It seems simple at first, but when it boils down to brass tacks (gleaming rose gold details is more like it in this case), do you really need a heart rate monitor built into your bangle? What it lacks in bells and whistles, however, the new Ricky bag makes up for in actual practicality. It’s first and foremost a handbag, so it’s got all of the classic Ralph Lauren touches, such as soft leather, a purple nappa-leather lined interior and hand-finished details. But the tech comes in via an LED light that turns on when you open the bag, illuminating its spacious interior so that you can find exactly what you’re looking for and a built-in USB charger for your smartphone. The true luxury is that everything is built in seamlessly right into the 50 pieces of leather and that jewelry-quality rose gold hardware. After eight months in development, Ralph Lauren’s third foray into fashion tech (the first was the Polo tech shirt with built-in heart rate monitor and stress level detector and the second was the designer’s 4D fashion show during New York Fashion Week) seems like a home run. The built-in battery lasts for 1,000 smartphone charges or four to five months of continual interior illumination. To charge it, you don’t have to remove the battery pack from your bag, simply pull out a cord and charge it through your laptop or a USB adapter.

Available in just one size and one color — 33 centimeters and black — the bag will be available for pre-order at just 10 Ralph Lauren locations worldwide with a price tag of $5,000 (the non-techy Ricky rings up at $3,500). It’ll be available in wide release next February.
