Shine Bright: Our Holographic Picks Under $75

Milly Fall/Winter 2013

Milly Fall/Winter 2013

When Michelle Smith showed bright, holographic leathers in her collection for Milly during New York Fashion Week, the audience wasn’t prepared for something so flashy from a brand known for wear-to-work staples and cute, quirky dresses that are perfect for standing out at parties. While the audience caught its breath — nothing is more exciting than the unexpected, right? — they were able to take in the collection’s pencil skirts, clutches, handbags and more, each done up in bright, holographic-treated leathers and new, futuristic fabrics.

While we don’t recommend wearing head-to-toe disco-ready holo, we do love the way that the treatment stands out from the usual sequins, sparkle and sheen that flood New Year’s Eve parties. Stand out in a good way with these picks, which you can incorporate into the most basic outfits for a dash of flash. You won’t break the bank on this trend either, because we’ve gathered together our favorite bold belts, bags and more for under $75.

Nasty Gal Holo at Me Crossbody

Nasty Gal Holo at Me Crossbody

Let all the other girls carry their clutches when the ball drops for 2014 — you’ll have your hands free for air kisses and champagne if you’ve got the Nasty Gal Holo at Me Crossbody ($60). The swingy bag has the same colorful flash as the leather pieces that Smith showed for Milly, but at a fraction of the size (and price) you’ll add just a touch of the trend instead of swimming in swaths of shimmer. Perfect for pairing with LBDs for after-dark occasions and with jeans and your favorite beat-up tee during the day, you’ll see just how easy it is to match when you see that it reflects back every color in the rainbow.

Available at Nasty Gal.

Rebecca Minkoff Cosmetic Case - Hologram Mila Glam Kit

Rebecca Minkoff Cosmetic Case – Hologram Mila Glam Kit

If you don’t want to wear something holographic but you still want to get in on the festivities, then the Rebecca Minkoff Cosmetic Case – Hologram Mila Glam Kit ($75) will fit perfectly into whatever bag you’re already carrying. Use it to stay a little more organized — that is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, right? — and keep stray glosses, lipsticks and more from crowding up your bag. Made of Italian leather treated with a holographic finish, it’s big enough to store a lot of makeup (it even has “Glam Kit” embossed on it in case you’ve forgotten just what’s inside) and won’t get lost in your bag, no matter how much it resembles a black hole of receipts, sunglasses, your wallet and more.

Available at Bloomingdale’s.

Levi's the Legging

Levi’s the Legging

For those who go bold, Levi’s the Legging ($54.90) takes the holographic trend and splashes it all over a daily staple. You’ve got your go-to denim leggings, but yours probably don’t shine as bright as these. From afar, they look like a metallic gold, but come a little closer and you’ll see that the stretch denim has been treated with a holographic sparkle. Wear them to make a statement on New Year’s Eve and keep them in your wardrobe all year if you’re not afraid to go for the gold. Basic blues? Make 2014 the year you go for bright, bold hues.

Nails, Inc. Fibre Optic Lacquer in Chelsea Passage

Nails Inc. Fibre Optic Lacquer in Chelsea Passage

Are you commitment phobic when it comes to trends? The easiest temporary way to integrate a color, texture or finish is to do it with a flashy new polish. Nails Inc. is England’s most forward-thinking brand of polish, which is why Sephora is always selling out of their newest collections — nail bloggers may be the most ravenous set of girls we’ve ever encountered — including the Fibre Optic Lacquers ($11). Filled with tiny particles of holographic bar glitter, the polish will have your tips gleaming just like any of these accessories, but you’ll be able to take them right off when you need to go a little more subtle. Choose from green (pictured), classic silver holographic or a deep blue shade — they’ll all make you look like a nail art master with just one coat.

Available at Sephora.

Nanette Lepore Plaque Buckle with Hologram Crackle Leather

Nanette Lepore Plaque Buckle Belt with Hologram Crackle Leather

Do you like the idea of holographic but you don’t think you can handle a dose as big as a bag? The Nanette Lepore Plaque Buckle Belt with Hologram Crackle Leather ($62.72) brings together two great holographic treatments. The crackle leather has a little bit of the holographic finish while the buckle takes the trend on a darker turn thanks to a more oil spill-inspired color. We love that it’s from a designer known for being saccharine sweet, too, because if a designer can go out of her comfort zone, so can you.

Available at Bloomingdale’s.
