Memorial Day weekend ushers in a season of summer frocks, statement sunglasses, bright, sunny hues and– if you’re not careful in the sun–raccoon eyes and unfortunate tan lines. But let’s think cup-half-full, shall we? We’ve gathered up our favorite summer items, and the best part is that they’ll all fit in an overnight bag for spur-of-the-moment summer trips.
A floral frock? It will work poolside (especially in this Palm Springs-ready print) and still look great after the sun sets. Kate Spade is already a go-to for whimsical bags all year long, but the brand is bringing its cheeky style to more of your closet with each new season. We love the fun Elliana Dress ($398) not only because of its colorful print, but also because of how easy it is to pack!

And for those who want to show their true colors, there’s no better way to kick the season off than with one of Catherine Malandrino’s signature American flag print dresses. It’s been spotted on everyone from Meryl Streep to Tatiana Ali and Louise Bourgouin. Best of all, it’s always in stock at her boutiques, no matter the season. It’s available in a variety of lengths, too, meaning you can make as big of a statement as you want and have everyone saluting your sense of style.

With the summer sun comes the necessary summer sunscreen. The FDA recently overhauled all of America’s sunscreen labeling requirements (click on the link to learn more), leaving some scratching their heads over the whole ordeal. What you need to know: There’s no more sunblock — only sunscreen. SPF needs to have a rating of at least 30 to claim that it can protect against skin cancer. Also, manufacturers aren’t allowed to claim that their products are sweatproof, waterproof or can provide instant protection. And, of course, make sure you’re using enough.
For the face, apply an almond-sized dollop and for the body, you’ll need an entire shot glass worth of cream to protect yourself. Murad’s Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30 checks all the boxes and leaves your skin matte finish instead of greasy shine.

Whether or not you’ve reached your bikini-read body, we say head to Malia Mills. Not only will you get cute cuts and an array of colors, the brand’s tops are available in a variety of cup sizes, leaving bathing suit malfunctions a thing of the past.
They also sell their suits as separates, giving you the most customization possible and the opportunity to mix and match all summer long.

Where are you going to stow all these goodies? Grab your favorite wedges and toss our picks into the Michael Michael Kors Hamilton Straw Tote ($328). It takes elements from his best-selling Hamilton line and substitutes all of the working-girl elements with resort-ready summer musts, such as woven straw and gleaming gold. It opens up so you can see all your summer staples stowed away and won’t look out of place on a beach resort or swinging from your arm during a whirlwind lunchtime shopping excursion. With plenty of room to spare, even with our summer picks tucked inside, it’s no surprise that it’s one of Kors’ (a jet-setting designer himself) summer musts, too.
