Just as fashion (and fast fashion, especially) is just getting its head around the idea of minimalism and ’90s nostalgia, leave it to L.A.’s own BCBG Max Azria to turn the conversation on its ear. Instead of looking back at the decade of grunge and Calvin Klein, king of barely there slip dresses, Lubov Azria turned to a king of a different sort: Elvis Presley.

From his Nashville roots to his Vegas heyday, the music icon — ahem, legend — has plenty to pull from. So Azria went wild, filling BCBG’s pre-fall collection with plenty of Presley- inspired rock ‘n’ roll decadence, over-the-top embellishment, and most of all, a slew of clothes real women will want to wear when they’re sick and tired of Coachella castoffs and those ’90s reruns.

Instead of going full-tilt Viva Las Vegas, Azria held back and instead applied various elements of the King’s signatures on the season’s most covetable silhouettes. The cropped kick flares that dotted the runway shows last season? They’re out in full force, piped with western-inspired gilt threads. They’ll be the pant of the season, no contest. After the wide-legged track pants of last season and the billowing palazzos before them, leave it to BCBG to cut a mean pair of trousers that have even the most die-hard denim heads questioning their blues.

Another Elvis signature? Fringe — and it just so happens to be a BCBG trademark, too. Fringe made an appearance on knits, pants and more, offering up some visual interest in pieces that looked simple from afar. There were also plenty of western gaucho details on sheer shirts and in a star print, which played well with everything from cropped leather pants to denim, a major touchstone for the last few BCBG collections.

Studs and lace were on display, too, which not only hit on Sin City decadence, but Elvis’ own jumpsuits. And speaking of jumpsuits, there were a few on offer, too, and the street-style set will definitely be showcasing them when they hit stores.

But BCBG is known for boho more than anything, so plenty of the western details played nice with silhouettes like maxi dresses, peasant tops and more, giving a welcome update to staple pieces — especially for the L.A. crowd. And for those who just can’t let go of that ’90s nostalgia, Azria offered up a denim take on the slinky slip dress. No, it wasn’t something you’d want to wear during a boudoir romp, but it would definitely turn heads at a rodeo. Worn with a studded denim jacket, it had enough western influence to fit in and a dash of California cool to really stand out from the crowd.
