Never one to do anything quietly, uber-animated, always-manic designer Betsey Johnson debuted her first swimwear collection with a huge splash and bash during Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week: SWIM in Miami. The somersaulting 71-years-young designer took cues from her vast archive for a collection that integrated every Betsey-ism you could think of. Inspired by her own personality, the energetic and vivacious collection is set to hit stores next year, ready to make a splash at the first pool parties of 2014.

“My swim is for the young and the forever young!” said Johnson. “It’s fun and flirty and a little bit rock and roll. I want my girls to feel good in my suits so it’s also all about the fit!”

To perfect the fit, Johnson enlisted the experts at Malibu Design Group (also responsible for the design of swim brands, such as Maidenform swim and more), which has been a huge name in the swim industry for over 30 years. While Betsey wasn’t on the official roster at MBFW: SWIM, the designer decked out the roof of the Betsy Hotel (no relation) for her presentation, which featured colorful wigs, an array of one- and two-piece bathing suits and a healthy dose of the whimsy and fun that Johnson’s shows are known for.

Betsey Johnson die-hards will recognize the designer’s rose prints, rock ‘n roll touches and more on the swim collection, as well as neon colors, lace-detailing and other fun extras. Think of it as a “best of” Betsey, because we don’t think that a tutu would fare well in the pool — although many of Johnson’s fans will remember that the designer herself somersaulted into a pool during one episode of America’s Next Top Model.

The collection also draws on Betsey’s love of traveling (she’s got a namesake resort in Mexico that’s also outfitted with rose prints, polka dots and plenty of lace and tulle), incorporating mesh inserts inspired by the French cabaret, peplums taken straight from the runways of New York and Paris and the romantic ruffles that mark couture collections and Milan’s catwalk offerings.

Look for the line’s debut when it hits stores in the spring of 2014, and get your sunglasses ready, too, because these babies are meant to shine in and out of the water.
