Club Monaco Goes Luxe with Collection, Opens New Fifth Ave. Flagship

Club Monaco Collection

Once, Club Monaco was one of fashion’s sleeper hits. Other labels got all the attention for being all about fast fashion, having a certain First Lady as a fan or hailing from overseas. Instead of seeking attention, Club Monaco has brought its focus on the actual clothes and the stores that sell them. The result? People are taking a second look at the label and like we’ve known all along, the like what they see. The brand is expanding, recently adding a women’s shoe range and today, introducing their new high-end Collection line. Look for it in a Collection-only boutique opening this weekend SoHo and the brand’s new Fifth Avenue flagship coming later this year.

The Collection line draws on some of Club Monaco’s standard offerings, such as clean, modern lines, sharp tailored pieces and minimalist leanings. But whereas Club Monaco’s main line is priced at a contemporary level, the new Collection line boasts a higher price point and more luxurious materials. Cashmere, pony hair, napa leather, and fur all make appearances in lieu of the main line’s wools, cottons and silks.

“There’s more of a designer eye on it, without overdesigning it,” says Caroline Belhumeur, senior vice president of women’s design.

The first season of Collection features a standout red motorcycle jacket in buttery leather and sophisticated basics rendered in black, camel, gray and white. Other key pieces include a ponyhair and leather chevron-patchwork skirt, a cashmere sweater dress and a fur chubby done in shearling. Club Monaco’s best-selling faux-leather front leggings have also been produced in the real deal, giving shoppers another piece to scramble for once it hits the sales floor.

Club Monaco will open a store dedicated to the Collection line on Saturday. Situated on Bleecker Street in the West Village, the store will rub elbows with parent brand Ralph Lauren, as well as other advanced contemporary labels such as Comptoir des Cotonniers, Zadig & Voltaire and Jack Spade. Also on the block are Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs’ empire of men’s and women’s stores (and Bookmarc) and FTD fave NARS. Within walking distance, Equipment, Piperlime and more will all vie for shoppers’ attention.

The store, which will feature the brand’s menswear, Collection and womenswear collection and the Makers & Muses capsule collections (current contributors include handbag designer Jane Mayle and shoe designer du jour Mark McNairy). The store will be outfitted with vintage Parisian fireplaces, repurposed pharmacy shelves and Art Deco furniture throughout. The store will also have an outpost of popular bookstore the Strand a café featuring Williamsburg’s Toby’s Estate Coffee. Club Monaco plans on hosting monthly authors’ events in the store, mixing culture and clothing under one chic roof.
