Monday Muse: Elizabeth & James Goes Wabi Sabi For Pre-Fall

After last season’s neon explosion, Elizabeth and James fans will get a bit more polish and quirky cool when the brand’s delivery hits store shelves. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have been deft at creating their sister brand’s DNA, so fans expect longline silhouettes, easy pieces that work for business and pleasure alike, and a bit of Olsen cool. But this time around, the design savants have looked to the Japanese principle of wabi sabi to add a little unexpected twist to the line.

For those unfamiliar, wabi sabi is all about embracing imperfection. The Olsens took that idea and ran with the Japanese theme to create an Elizabeth and James outing that blended traditional indigo with hand-hewn touches that add an heirloom quality to the pieces that devotees know and love.

Wrap jackets and patchwork ponchos illustrated the wabi-sabi ethos the most clearly and they’re sure to become longtime favorites for anyone who happens to be lucky enough to pick one up — the store at The Grove is a must-shop for a reason; namely its amazing selection. Those perfectly imperfect pieces will lend a bit of casual cool to even the most polished outfits, including slouchy button-ups and wide-leg pants, which also were on display.

Ease and comfort are two major hallmarks of Elizabeth and James. Long, flowing midis and maxis — in bolts of cherry — exemplified those tenants, but the spotlight will definitely shine on more everyday picks, like super-soft enzyme-washed hoodies and T-shirts. The uniform of California just got an upgrade thanks to Chez Olsen. Best of all, just about everything seemed perfect for layering.

These clothes will hit stores just in time for summer, so shoppers can pile on the tees and dresses to soak up the sun before layering on the ponchos and outerwear when the fall chill sets in. Each look was styled with classic two-strap Birkenstock Arizona sandals, so anyone fearing that the jolie-laide shoe would be fading back into the world of Berkeley co-ops needn’t fear. With a renewed stamp of approval from the Olsens, fans can keep wearing them with pride.
