Every season, the fashion press waits to see exactly how Max and Lubov Azria will tweak the bandage dresses at Hervé Léger. Since 1998, they’ve been at the helm of the Parisian brand and brought those bandages to the red carpet on celebs that run the gamut from Taylor Swift and Caitlyn Jenner to Rihanna and Laverne Cox. It’s transcended being a dress women wear on a night out, the brand has become a firebrand for femininity. Women have curves — why not show them off? With that in mind, the Azrias took a sharp 180, going from glam to grunge to create a collection that takes some of the paparazzi shine off of these bombshell dresses and injects them with a major dose of edge.

“Hervé Léger is always associated with glamour, sensuality — being unforgettable,” Lubov Azria said backstage. “This time around, we wanted to turn the knob a little bit. We wanted it to be alternative, a little bit edgier — a little bit cooler, not in terms of an attitude, but just taking more risk.”

Azria name-checked Gwen Stefani and Rihanna as inspiration, and there was plenty of rock on the runway, right down to the knee-high Dr. Marten boots. Grunge and glam rock may be on opposite ends of the musical spectrum, but this collection seemed to merge the two together: a quilted blanket coat came mashed up with a leather jacket and grommetted leggings. Safety pins were strategically placed on a dress to trace the contours of the body on a classic bandage dress and a plaid shirt — not flannel, but high-tech knit — were slung around the hips on another.

Distressed, frayed edges, chains and car-wash hems disrupted the usually sleek and skin-tight Léger lines, though that’s not to say that the collection was no less glam than usual. Geometric patterns recalling plaids and plenty of metallic shine made just about every piece nighttime ready. Tiers of embellishment and a mix of jacquard and grommets kept things interesting — almost overwhelmingly so. But it all came together in a collection of pieces that fit perfectly in the vein of ’90s nostalgia. Toss on a faux fur chubby, wiggle into a bandage dress and toughen it up with those lace-up Docs. Channeling Rihanna was never this easy.
