Monday Muse: Jenni Kayne Resort is California Cool

One label that brings Cali cool season after season is Jenni Kayne. From her celeb-frequented shops (for both apparel and home) to must-read blog and yes, those d’Orsay flats, there’s a little bit of laid-back luxe in everything — no matter how big or small — she touches. For Kayne’s latest collection, she’s taking a step forward: the laid-back luxe that she’s known for is still there, and in spades, but our girl Jenni is adding a few touches of embellishment and upgrading her materials for a truly luxe collection that’s perfect for Cali girls soaking up San Fran’s foggy summer nights, Malibu’s morning sea spray and the midcentury cool of Palm Springs.

While “staples” mean one thing to some people — black blazers, tailored trousers and their brethren — in the world of Jenni Kayne, those wardrobe touchstones are replaced by slouchy fits, über-luxe cashmere fabrication and a few unexpected details and color combinations. This collection was sun-bleached and full of touch-me textiles such as silks, linens and yes, those chubby cashmeres. Everything from peasant blouses and wide-leg trousers were relaxed and ready for a vacation — no bodycon in sight — because it’s only in California that these pieces are the real staples and the suiting is relegated to special occasions.

And while those relaxed shapes will be nothing new to the brand’s loyalists, what will give them reason to pause — and pull out their credit cards — are the touches of suede, fringe and tassels that appear on a few pieces. For the past few years, Kayne has offered up minimal basics done in luxurious fabrics a la The Row (minus the four-digit price tags). But after experimenting with flourishes and subtle details for Resort 2016, shoppers can expect more in the future.

“I think this is my favorite collection to date,” Kayne said.

Balmain it’s not, because Kayne’s hand is feather-light, but the tunics, blouses and wear-everywhere pajamas (yes, you read that right) are sure to build a cult following of their own. And those d’Orsay flays? They’ve been updated with a new slip-on offering, but don’t worry, they’ll always be on offer in their original shape. Some things never change.
