For years now, Joie has been the label for cool girls that love L.A. style with a bit of Francophile flair. Even the brand’s name sounds French, so it’s no surprise that many people — even the babes who love the brand — think it’s actually from Paris. But in reality, it’s an L.A. label that’s earned a top spot among contemporary brand for offering up cool, breezy clothes that girls everywhere want to wear. Well, for the very first time, the brand decided to host a presentation in Paris, giving the clothes a setting that echoed the sensibility and style of the line.

Joie has always been romantic — it’s a label that vintage-loving women flock to when they don’t have the time to actually head to vintage stores (or hate the heartbreak of finding a one-of-a-kind creation that doesn’t quite fit). So for this Parisian collection, designer Rachel Wilder-Hill amped up the romance and femininity. There were touches of lace and intricate embroidery. The collection also marks 15 years of the line, which started out as a denim-based label. The jeans have clearly taken a backseat to other offerings, which is especially evident if you’ve happened upon one of the brand’s Left Bank-inspired shops.

To passersby, it might look like typical boho festival fare, but what sets Joie apart from its contemporaries is its fabrication and attention to detail. Gauzy voiles are lighter than air. Embroideries are clean and crisp, but look hand-hewn and authentic. There’s a luxury behind the boho layers, especially with the addition of skinny belts, drawstring details and flowing sleeves. Critics of the line say it’s moved past its denim roots, but what we see is the Joie girl growing up. She’s graduated from designer denim to maxis, suede trousers ’70s Charlotte Rampling influences. Those were seen most clearly on tea dresses and soft, washed denim pieces.
