When we heard that there was another fashion collaboration in the pipeline for fall, the Fashion Trends Daily staff treated it with a little bit of indifference — after all, nary a month goes by without the announcement of another high/low mashup, whether it’s with a fast fashion giant, a department store or a big beauty brand. But when we heard that the Limited was teaming with Scandal star Kerry Washington and Lyn Paolo, the show’s costume designer, we knew it would result in a totally different kind of fashion collab.
The collection, which is set to hit Limited stores in September, blends Olivia Pope’s covetable closet staples with Emmy-nominated Kerry Washington’s own personal style. Meta? Definitely, but since just about every outfit that Pope wears on the show is scrutinized and inevitably lusted after, it makes sense that Washington and Paolo would bring the show’s style to fans across the country.
“It’s been really fun to have a voice at every stage of the production from picking buttons, choosing fabrics and weighing in on hair and makeup people,” Washington told WWD. “Being an actor who has worn fashion and being somebody who is a fixture on red carpets, I have been able to pull from every level of my experience, including working with magazines.”
Washington, who has been known to walk the red carpet in designers ranging from MaxMara to Jason Wu and Tory Burch, has been topping best dressed lists with her affinity for wide-legged trousers, bow-blouses and delicate, ladylike gowns. The collection that she’s presented with the Limited (and worked on with the brand’s head of design Elliot Staples touches on a few of those Washington signatures, which also happen to be Pope’s go-tos on the show, too. From what we’ve seen from the preview sketches, expect those same wide-legged trousers, the tailored coats that have become one of Scandal’s sartorial draws and more.
The Limited’s chief executive officer Diane Ellis adds, “Her character represents a confident, powerful, but real and kind of vulnerable woman. Our sophisticated professional can really relate to that. She’s dealing with crisis, scandal and a life that is very complex and challenging, not maybe to the extent [as Olivia]. I don’t think our typical client is having a relationship with the president. But she’s dealing with her own version of complexity and juggling a young family at home and perhaps a career. The appeal is at the same time she always looks fabulous.”
The collection is sure to make an appearance on the upcoming season of Scandal, but you can pick it up in stores this fall, where pieces from the 42-piece collection will range from $49 to $248. The collection will also be available online.
