Monday Muse: Cindy Crawford Inspires Thakoon Addition Resort 2013

You’ve got to have faith — faith in fashion, that is — because like platforms, animal print and designer logos, supermodels never seem to be out of vogue. Whether you know them from their debut in the ’80s, their high fashion heyday in the ’90s or their resurgence in the late ’00s, these glamour goddesses keep coming back to inspire designers of all fashion genres. After all, they had a bevy of beauties to choose from. But all-American athlete Cindy Crawford — she of the beauty mark and fountain of youth — is the one that Thakoon Panichgul chose to single out for his latest Thakoon Addition collection.

Cindy Crawford was the super who did it all. Beauty (she still holds the title as Revlon’s longest-running spokesmodel), fashion (remember her stomping down the Versace runways), celebrity — Richard Gere, enough said — and even a Playboy pictorial cemented her in the minds of everyone from the fashion cognoscenti  to those in America’s heartland. Crawford hails from Illinois, after all, which might explain her downhome appeal. In stark contrast to the high-fashion Paulina Porizkova and Naomi Campbell as well as Euro-chic Claudia Schiffer, Crawford was all apple pie and athletic beauty.

Where some of the other supers were rail thin (ahem, Christy), Crawford’s sporty build made her the everywoman of the bunch. Her career is still going strong, but what we remember her for is her beauty mark and her ability to look chic whether she was hosting MTV’s House of Style or walking the runway for the world’s most influential designers.

For his secondary (though no less important) collection, Panichgul has always kept a sportif undercurrent. Sure, his M.O. was generally remixing sporty basics in elevated materials, but that meant that something as simple as a boxer short was elevated when it was rendered in soft suede. For Resort 2014, he took Cindy staples such as body-con silhouettes and athletic-inspired basics and pulled them away from the body instead of having the clothes hug every curve. Sound unsexy? Not when fabrics were begging to be touched (suedes and treated silks abounded) and hems were kept short. The evening pieces drew from athletic shapes by incorporating racerbacks, tank silhouettes and more while daytime looks were slashed to show a peek of midriff. Gym heads will recognized slashed-at-the-sides muscle tees, which demure dames will want to layer with Thakoon’s light-as-air tees, giving a wink and a nod to Cindy’s signature body-contouring looks.
