We’re used to seeing glamazon Victoria’s Secret angel Alessandra Ambrosio done up with a blowout, body bronzer and of course, a set of stunning lingerie, but the supermodel did a full 180 turn from her usual style for the grand opening of Wildfox Couture’s new L.A. flagship. Instead of a predictable body-con cocktail number, the model wore a a grunge-inspired outfit worthy of any garage band groupie.
Thanks to Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane, Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing and the revival of Donatella Versace’s Versus Versace line, the ’90s grunge revival is back in full swing. The best part about the haphazard, thrown-together look is that it’s actually easy to throw together your own take on the trend. Ambrosio paired a slouchy lazer, a flannel and ripped jeans just like Courtney Love would have done in her heyday. The finishing touch? A hipster-approved slouchy hat. So if you’re looking to really turn heads the next time you head out, read on for our take on this stellar outfit.
Finding the perfect pair of jeans is daunting enough, but with everything from skin-skimming skinnies to boot cut and trouser jeans all becoming necessities instead of denim extras, it gets even harder. One of the most elusive shapes to pin down is the boyfriend, which needs to have the perfect balance of carefree slouch and sex appeal. The BLANKNYC Destroyed Boyfriend Jeans ($98) hits that sweet spot, skirting between sexy, thanks to plenty of skin-baring distressing, and slouchy, courtesy a higher rise that doesn’t quite get into mom jeans territory (and that’s a good thing). They’re the perfect pair of boyfriends whether you’re looking for a glam take on the trend à la Jennifer Aniston (paired with sky-high heels) or if you’re leaning the other direction and want to go grunge. We told you they were perfect.

1. Top off your look with the DKNY Reversible Slouchy Beanie Hat ($55), a cozy and cool accessory that blends downtown cool with streetwear inspiration.
2. If you’ve got a boyfriend, a dad or a brother who’s well stocked on flannels, you’re in luck. But if you don’t — or your guys aren’t pulling looks from the L.L. Bean catalog — try the Madewell Flannel Cozy Shirt ($79.50). Tied around your waist as a nonchalant accessory or worn properly as an actual shirt, it serves double duty.
3. Skip your silky tanks if you’re going for all-out grunge. Instead, grab the super soft James Perse Skinny Crew Tank ($85) for a t-shirt that feels as soft as silk but has the heft of cotton.
4. To get Alessandra Ambrosio’s boho beads, an heirloom-inspired necklace such as the Chan Luu Beaded Tassel Necklace ($180) does the trick.
5. If your blazer says “work” instead of “work it,” get something a little more relaxed, such as the Gap Classic Pique Blazer ($88). Buy it up a size for some louche slouch and plenty of styling opportunities.
