Outfit Inspiration: Jamie Chung’s Varsity Jacket

Just because an outerwear piece isn’t full length doesn’t mean it can’t be eye-catching. In L.A., especially, a huge coat might be overkill, even during the fall. But this season, instead of reaching for a peacoat or your favorite leather piece, why not lighten up with something a little less bulky but still gets high marks in the style department. Actress Jamie Chung stepped out in a chic green varsity jacket that’s perfect for fall when combined with leather leggings and a bold floral and will work equally well next year when the temps star their upward trajectory again.

Chung, who stars in the new Disney film Big Hero 6  as well as television shows such as Once Upon a Time, is a burgeoning street style star, being snapped all over Los Angeles as well as front row at New York Fashion Week. Her polished, cool style is all about easy pieces that have a lot of personality. Case in point: this bold varsity jacket. Paired with the usual tank and jeans, it’s a great fall outfit, but Chung challenges convention by pairing a sporty piece with a feminine floral top and bad-girl leather jeans. Together, it’s a great outfit no matter what the weather man reports.

Even if you didn’t letter in any sports during your high school years, there’s no reason to skip out on this sporty, athletic trend. You’ll find plenty of wool and felt jackets in store these days, but for a versatile piece that won’t be relegated to the cooler months, try the DKNY x Cara Delevingne Satin Varsity Jacket ($355).

It’s the perfect layering piece. Lightweight and crushable, it’s perfect paired with jeans and tees, but consider adding it to more feminine picks such as floral dresses and even LBDs to add a cool, downtown edge. Come spring, it’ll look great worn with shorts, too.

Available at Shopbop.

1. Leather — or faux leather — leggings are a standby no matter what your style is. A perennial favorite is the Club Monaco Tasha Legging ($149.50), which is available in basic black and a slew of fall jewel tones.

2. Don’t stow away your flash lensed sunglasses to storage just yet. If you picked up something like the Ray-Ban Velvet Square Keyhole Sunglasses ($135), feel free to wear it all year long for a bright injection of color.

3. Chung’s delicate necklace is a barely-there gem, but you can go bold with an outfit like this. Try the Rebecca Minkoff Triple Blades Necklace ($128) for a bit of bling.

4. Fall florals? The Eight Sixty Night Bloom Tank ($54.97) is something you can wear no matter the season thanks to a combination of deep shades and bright hues.

5. If you’re looking to update your basic black pumps, the Chinese Laundry Nala ($49.47) are just the thing to put a little sparkle in your step.
