We are positive that you’ve got a blazer in your wardrobe arsenal. How are we so sure? Because everyone’s got one. Black, navy, grey, it doesn’t matter — we’ve all got a blazer that we reach for every time we need to look polished and professional. Zoe Saldana, who has become a fashion plate in her own right thanks to designers such as Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa and Givenchy’s Ricardo Tischi, is one actress that’s been spotted wearing one outside of its usual cubicle environs (something tells us that Saldana hasn’t spent much time in a cube under life-draining fluorescent lights) and pairs it with more casual pieces for a cool off-duty polish.
Take a cue from Saldana’s style and pair your blazer with some unexpected pieces you already own. We love seeing the masculine staple put with a super girly dress (for real fashion editor cred, just perch it on your shoulders and wear it like a cape — you’ll be a sartorial superhero) or do as Yves would and wear it with skinny pants for a classic le smoking look. Just make sure it’s tailored, trim and makes you feel like a million bucks.
We hate to say it, but there are a few things you have to splurge on and one of them is a tailored blazer. You’ll find plenty of them at fast fashion retailers, your go-to workwear stores and department stores, but this is one thing that’s worth going big. You’ll wear it for years and, if you take a lesson from us, you’ll find that you can wear it with anything. Stella McCartney honed her chops on Saville Row, so you know that she’s got tailoring and suiting running through her veins. Pick up a classic piece from her line and you won’t regret it. The classic Iris jacket ($1,320) gets an update with a stretch wool-twill blend, making it comfortable whether you roll up the sleeves and go casual or pair it with pointy pumps and a take no prisoners attitude for the big meeting.
Available at Net-a-Porter.
1. We love pops of color and bold patterns, but there’s something to be said about keeping it simple and going completely monochromatic. It’s a strong, confident look and you’ll find that it’s the easiest way to go from work to drinks without changing a single thing. The Theory Pavona Jumpsuit in Selection Silk ($445) is a one-piece wonder that’s comfortable thanks to it’s heavy washed silk fabric and it’s go-everywhere silhouette.
2. Instead of a statement necklace or a dainty charm, get the best of both from the Alexis Bittar Crystal Encrusted Long Spear Necklace ($155). It’s subtle and flashy at once thanks to it’s long chain and asymmetrical shape. It’s from the designer’s Miss Havisham collection, but wear it with the jumpsuit and you’ll feel like you can take on the world, not wait around for a dud husband.
3. Taking a cue from one of our favorite designers, Rachel Roy, we’d pair the sleek jumpsuit and tailored blazer with a chunky, trendy shoe. The Circus by Sam Edelman Skye heel ($110) combines some of the season’s biggest trends: mixed media and a caged shape, with serious hardware and a chunky lug-inspired sole.
4. And finally, leave your tote at your desk (you did snatch up the investment-worthy Mansur Gavriel, right?) and opt for the Zara Studded Mini Clutch ($79.90). It’s got enough room for your essentials while looking anything but basic.
