It’s a simple fact: Cool girls wear 3.1 Phillip Lim. Certain designers may steal the spotlight now and then, but when you boil it down to real clothes that you see on the streets, there’s a lot out there that can trace its way back to the cuts, shapes and trends that Lim incorporates in his collections. It’s easy to see why: there’s the perfect balance of polish and laid-back luxe no matter where Lim draws his inspiration. With so many fans channeling that hip downtown feel, it’s easy to forget that Lim came from California’s sunny shores. To remind everyone of that particular fact, his resort collection brought together skate and surf influences for an unexpected mix of completely covetable clothes you’ll see all over your Instagram in the weeks to come.

Call it boho lite — only cut with the addition of surf and skate. There was a rashguard trimmed in silk ruffles, off-the-shoulder ruffle dresses printed with a Venice Beach-appropriate acid floral, and even a Hawaiian shirt done in black and white (though there was also a persimmon-and-turquoise version for the truly tropic-obsessed).
It was, overall, a softer collection for Lim, who has been known to draw on things like geology and topographical maps for inspiration. Lim has been exploring more flowing pieces for the last few seasons, with a focus on boudoir-inspired statement dresses. This time, his lingerie dressing included bold industrial zippers and metallic insets, making the trend not only wearable, bit giving it a cool edge that takes it right out of the bedroom and onto the hard streets. But fans of his tailoring won’t be disappointed, either. With resort collections often making up a huge chunk of designers’ offerings for the year, Lim had a double-breasted suit on offer along with a leather bomber — with something for everyone, the cool girls can rest easy with all that’s on offer.
