While she was born in San Diego and runs her business out of NYC, Rebecca Minkoff has a business that spans coast to coast — and with stores in Hong Kong, Japan, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai, it spans oceans and the world, too. Plus, let’s not forget that she’s all over in Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s stores, too. But one thing that sells no matter where the stores are? The California girl with her laid-back attitude, her carefree vibe, and her penchant for mixing a vintage tee (real or faux, it doesn’t matter) with joggers and jeans alike. With her stores acting as digital experiences as well as brick-and-mortar environments that flesh out the Minkoff mindset, the designer gets almost-instant feedback every time one of her girls picks up a bag or tries on a coat. Through that crowdsourced data, her spring 2017 collection encompassed California’s proclivity for separates, but these girls have their passports ready (to visit a faroff Minkoff shop?).
For those who equate California style with boho, there were a few gauzy embroidered dresses and off-the-shoulder silhouettes in deep indigo and white. And since this collection is scheduled to drop in March (that’s festival season), they couldn’t be hitting stores at a better time. But for those not headed to Coachella, there was a novel mix-and-match feel to the separates.

Tees with ’70s-inspired graphics were paired with kick-flare jeans in bleached-out white and topped with an heirloom jacket. It was a little bit Beach Boys and a little bit Grey Gardens. In a world that’s been hit with Gucci fever, it’s just the thing to give girls the look without having them cash in their 401(k). And belive it or not, Minkoff is dipping her toes into the Juicy Couture-Pam & Gela world of terrycloth separates, too. It’s an extention of the knitwear that’s becoming synonymous with the brand.
And since her line’s become a worldwide entity, the collection included a shearling coat, rompers, and more. So no matter your locale, there’s a look to go with it. Minkoff built her label on accessories and there were plenty of fringed and sueded bags that begged to be touched. Patches and embellishement gave a few bags a touch of magpie in the best way. If you’re not headed to Tulum, Marfa, or the UAE soon, they may just sate your wanderlust for now.
