Monday Muse: Bees & Janis Joplin Inspire Rodarte Spring 2017

In the world of Rodarte, inspiration can come from just about anything? Flotsam and jetsam? Check. L.A.’s chola culture? Yep, the Mulleavy sisters have gone there (and it was fabulous). But what about pretty things like florals and flounces? Well, for a line known for cerebral fashion and clothes that aren’t necessarily “pretty,” it never came to mind. Until now. For spring 2017, the ladies of Rodarte looked to bees and flowers for inspiration — but threw in a little bit of rock goddess Janis Joplin for good measure. (Got to keep us on our toes, right?)

Though many (many, many) labels go the floral route for spring — groundbreaking or not — it came as a surprise for a line such as Rodarte. But a closer look revealed a more sinister undercurrent running through the dresses, cocktail frocks, and gowns. But back to the florals, first: embroideries and details are a Rodarte signature, and it was no different here. Couture-level additions were sprinkled on Swiss dot and tulle ruffles. It felt new for Rodarte, which is more often associated with goth cool than feminine flounce.

A closer look revealed more bee-related detailing, such as honeycomb lace and rows of safety pin detailing along hems. In addition to floral emboidery and applique, flowers were cutout on leather jackets (that’s where Joplin’s influence came in), too. The rock-‘n’-roll edge toned down the collection’s sweetness and it’s what collectors are sure to gravitate towards, especially when they see the studs, rhinestones and flowing laser-cut filigree up close.

Believe it or not, the collection — with all of its extras — was a pared-down take on the usual Rodarte outing. Instead of netting, sequins, and belts all on one piece, the dresses done in a single monochromatic fabric were fresh and clean — even with beehive-inspired bodices. Whether it’s a one-off exploration of Rodarte minimalism or a new direction for the everchanging line, it looks like the buzz is louder than ever.
