It’s been a real scorcher in Southern California recently, and dressing for fall has been one of the last things on our minds since we’ve still got our favorite one-piece in rotation and our jeans haven’t seen the light of day for the last few months. But eventually — we hope — the weather will cool down and we’ll have to put away our favorite cutoffs and swap in our fall staples. But what if you’re not ready to let go of your boho maxis? We’ve enlisted style blogger Jennifer Wilson of Modern Ensemble to give us a few tips and tricks to get the most mileage out of summer clothes long after the red cups come out at Starbucks.

Since November of 2013, Wilson has been offering up ideas and inspiration on her blog, which spans fashion, beauty, travel and design. She brings the experience of working as both a wardrobe stylist and an interior designer to create a unique point of view that’s polished and 100% Californian. Laid back and relaxed — while still being luxe and refined — Wilson’s own style and easy tips have earned her a loyal readership and more. Being the quintessential California girl, she is well versed on fun in the sun and dressing up alike.

“As someone who has grown up in Southern California my whole life, I am used to our crazy weather patterns,” says Wilson. “I get through long summers with a mix of layered options.”

Layers in the 100+ degree heat? That’s right, because as Wilson knows (and shows on her blog) layers can be added and taken away when the weather acts up or you head indoors. And while the rest of the country is dusting off their tweeds and polishing up their boots, Californians aren’t quite there yet. When Mother Nature does give us the chill, however, Wilson is ready with a few smart ways to take her summer staples into the fall.

“I love taking my silk maxi dresses from the summer and pairing them with cropped pullover sweaters and booties or ballet flats for a great fall vibe,” she says. “It breathes new life into those summery pieces and makes them appropriate for cooler weather.”

Michelle Dalton Tyree, Fashion Trends Daily’s Editor in Chief, agrees. She’s already spotted a few choice sweaters from Etoile Isabel Marant and Marni that have made her fall Must list. Adding just a touch of fall to any of summer’s outfits is instantly fresh and as easy as slipping on a sweater. Skip the sandals and just about anything seems just a little more serious and a little more apropos for the seasonal shift.

“Fall’s chunky, cozy sweaters are so yummy to the touch and to hibernate in all fall and winter,” said Tyree. “They’re on trend but classic enough to get you through many seasons to come. Throw them on over your maxi, add some booties and you’re good to go.”

And as for what to buy when you actually do need to put away your bathing suits and crop tops? Wilson’s fall shopping list takes into account Indian summers and cool nights, too. Because even though days can be scorching, as soon as the sun sets and that ocean breeze blows in, even the hardiest Angelenos need to cover up just a little bit.

“I am loving leather mini skirts currently and they can easily be worn now with a tee and strappy heels or flats during this transitional time in the season,” Wilson says. “And with a chunky knit and booties once fall weather arrives.”
