Tory Burch Opens Rodeo Drive Flagship, Debuts New Home Line

It’s lucky number 13 for Tory Burch, who opened her 13th California boutique last week on Rodeo Drive. Not too shabby for a brand that started out on Robertson, the shopping drag popularized by Balenciaga bag-toting socialite-cum-celebrities and immortalized in Sofia Coppola’s Bling Ring. And while they’re just a few miles apart, the two shopping destinations couldn’t be any different. Burch’s Rodeo Drive flagship rubs shoulders with big brands such as Vuitton, Cartier, Tom Ford, Chanel and more, while on Robertson, her neighbors include Agnès B., Allsaints and well, Chanel.

But it’s not just the big news of opening a shop on one of the most storied streets in L.A. that’s got Burch back in the fashion buzz. The new store also marks the designer’s first foray into items to outfit your home. It’s one-stop shopping brought to a chic new level: one visit and you can dress yourself, outfit your home and fill your makeup bag — and for Burch’s legion of on-the-go fans, it’s the perfect combo.

The facade of the new store is inspired by the Chinese chippendales furniture that Burch was surrounded by as a child. It’s also an eye-catching way to stand out among the other huge brands on Rodeo, and more importantly, it’s still signature Tory.

“The inspiration was Chinese Chippendale furniture, which my parents had when I was growing up. It was really about taking that and translating it into brass over stone,” Burch told the L.A. Times. “The fretwork motif also carries through the collection and the cap of the new perfume bottle.”

In addition to the ready-to-wear and accessories that Burch has built her brand on, that perfume and more are what set the Rodeo Drive flagship apart from her empire of boutiques around the world. In addition to Bloomingdale’s, which has the initial exclusive on Burch’s beauty line, her boutiques are the only place that you can buy her curated selection of bronzers, blushes and lip products — and her first eponymous fragrance.

Inside the store, you’ll find antiques from Burch’s travels to Morocco and more sprinkled in with the trademarks she’s become known for: lucite accents, bright orange walls and gold fixtures all over. Burch worked with Daniel Romualdez, who has designed all of Burch’s boutiques as well as her homes, to fill the store with worldly finds that mirror the her design ethos.

“It’s a combination of sophisticated and bohemian. Seafoam pillows and tile, mixed with some pieces I found in Morocco,” said Burch, “In Morocco, I found these antique Syrian tile mirrors, and I immediately thought of L.A.”

The store brings a focused eye to Burch’s latest endeavor: home. There are brass picture frames, clear acrylic entertaining items (ice buckets and trays) as well as needlepoint pillows that were inspired by items that were found in the Burch home.

“We took some pillows my parents needlepointed when I was growing up and remade them,” said Burch. “One style has the phrase, ‘Everything begets thee to me,’ which was a saying my father had with my mother.”

While it’s the first spot that you’ll be able to browse Burch’s home goods, there’s no doubt that she’ll be integrating the new category into her existing stores. It’s a natural fit to pick up a frame or a pillow when you’re already in to browse the designer’s shoes and statement necklaces. On the horizon is Tory Burch Sport, a new division for Burch’s line that will include clothes for tennis, golf, yoga and other active pursuits. Look for that in 2015, which we’re sure will be the tipping point of Tory’s world domination.
