Backstage Beauty: Thakoon and 3.1 Phillip Lim

Thakoon’s girl has never been a shy one. The designer’s use of prints and colors have made him a favorite among such style setters as Michelle Obama and Anna Wintour. In an unexpected turn, the color moved north, with models sporting hair powdered in hues of purple, pink and yellow. Thakoon said that for this collection he took  inspiration from the spice markets of India.

Nars artist Diane Kendal chose to focus on the brow. “I wanted to focus on a classic, strong brow,” she said. “On the eyes, I focused on contouring to show strength and attitude, a cowboy attitude.” Defined and strong, it was a sharp contrast to the playful colors of the clothing and hair. Kendal used Nars new Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, quickly becoming a Fashion Week favorite, and the aptly named Gaiety, a new blush debuting in 2012.

Gaiety also made an appearance at Phillip Lim’s show, which took inspiration from the “freedom of kites.” (Hey, if the clothes are fab, frogs could be the inspiration for all we care!). With such a lofty starting point, Nars artist Francelle pulled from the sky and air, choosing a metallic eye that was light and shimmery. Brows were feathered lightly, but the long, defined lashes reached skyward thanks to liberal coatings of Larger than Life Volumizing Mascara. The 3.1 Phillip Lim collection was heavy on black-and-white patterns, but models were softened with touches of pink. While we think some hair and makeup combos are strictly for the shows, the models at Lim looked like they could walk right off the runway and go fly a few kites without batting an eye.
