It seems as if beauty brands are starting to branch out from department and specialty stores — Hourglass opened its very first shop in Venice Beach and Urban Decay debuted its first store at Orange County’s Fashion Island and then its second freestanding store in London shortly after. The latest name to enter the mix is Smashbox Cosmetics, which plans to open up a hybrid studio and retail space in 2015.

Culver City’s Smashbox Studios, which currently plays host to seminars, photo shoots, sample sales and more, is receiving a $5 million dollar makeover, and part of that face lift is the addition of a unique retail space. In the past, Smashbox was Hollywood’s favorite photo space, with the 25,000 square foot space playing host to the cast of Modern Family, Pretty Little Liars and more, but it started to lose its gleam when newer, shinier studios popped up around the city. But after the acquisition of Smashbox Cosmetics by Estée Lauder in 2010, the brand decided to update their studio, which meant adding everything from iPad controlled lighting to the best equipment around, all recommended by the city’s premiere makeup artists, photographers and more.

The nip and tuck will bring in a retail space, a first for the brand, where Smashbox can test products and more before rolling out the concept to different locations around the world. Davis Factor, who started Smashbox along with his brother, tells us to expect the space to be open in 2015, with locations in London planned in the future. He also promises that the store concept will be different from anything we’ve seen before, so you can bet we’ll all be waiting for the big reveal.
