5 Minutes with January Jones: Mixing Fashion Decades and Beauty Essentials

If you’ve been watching the latest season of Mad Men, you might have noticed a sore lack of Betty Draper. While we can’t do anything about that — go talk to Matthew Weiner — we did catch up with the actress behind the scenes at this year’s Lucky FABB conference, where Jones spoke on a panel with Lucky‘s Editor in Chief Eva Chen. Clad in a polka dot frock by under-the-radar German label Schumacher (a longtime fave of ours), we talked about Jones’ favorite beauty splurges and her first foray behind the camera with BFF and beauty maven Cassandra Huysentruyt Grey for the Violet Files.

Fashion Trends Daily: Sadly, Mad Men is coming to a close, how is the mood on set?

January Jones: We all had advance notice of the finale, but everyone is emotional. Every day it’s the last time you’re filming with this person, or seeing that person. We expected it to go for one season at first, and then five — we’ve been together for seven years.

FTD: Are there any looks that you borrow from the set?

JJ: I don’t wear things from the ’50s or ’60s, but I’ve learned a lot about nails from the show. I have to wear acrylics [for Mad Men] but I always try to take them off before I get home. I’ll have to get them back on in a few days. As far as fashion goes, I like to be more modern or edgy.

FTD: So no Mid-century for you. What eras or decades do you love?

JJ: Right now. You can take lots of risks because anything’s acceptable.

FTD: We saw your beautiful feature on the Violet Files [from beauty site Violet Grey] and we also heard that you had some input on the shoot. How was it on the other side of the camera?

JJ: Cassandra’s been a friend for a long time, and I’ve always paid attention to what she’s been doing and we finally were available for each other. It was great collaborating. I had input in everything from photo editing to styling.

FTD: Betty Draper’s got some great lips, and you have a great lipstick on today, too. Is that a go-to look for you?

JJ: I love a bold lip and mascara. Sometimes I’ll do a smoky, elongated cat eye and a nude lip.

FTD: What are some go-to products that you can’t live without?

JJ: Clé de Peau concealer, it’s so pigmented and you don’t need much at all of it. By Terry lip balm.

FTD: And anything else you’re coveting?

JJ: I want the whole Saint Laurent collection. I went on Style.com during fashion week and made my list.
