Backstage at Badgley Mischka there was a Jonas Brother, a Gossip Girl and a nail polish demi-god. Deborah Lippmann was in charge of the models’ fingertips for the Midsummer Night’s Dream-inspired collection from Mark Badgley and James Mischka, which featured the duos usual red carpet showstoppers done up in a more romantic, ethereal style than the typical screen sirens we’re accustomed to seeing from them. Lippman’s color of choice was a new hue, Modern Love, which she’s touting as the new nude. We caught up with her during the frenzy of pre-show prep.

Modern Love

FTD: You’ve seen it all and watched so many nail trends come and go. What’s hot about this one?

DL: It’s called Modern Love. To me, mauve is the new nude. This is a really finished nail, it’s a very chic, fashion way to wear your nails.

FTD: Can anyone wear this color? It’s not really nude and it’s not really mauve…

DL: It’s good for any skin tone. But for this collection it just really worked as a muted pastel. For girls for everyday, we’ve done our sheer pinks, we’ve done our beiges, we’ve done our taupes, we went to greige. Now we’re back to something more feminine and girly.

FTD: We love that you mixed in the brown with the mauve, it makes it really different.

DL: This is really the new nude.

FTD: What are some colors for fall that we’ve got to try?

DL: I created a color called Let’s Go Crazy. It has kind of a purple base, a sheer jelly formula and it has the kind of glitter that I’m known for, which is not your little girl’s glitter. It’s a grown up glitter. Very rich. It’s lady glitter. It’s jewel tone for fall and it has different shapes and sizes of glitter in it. It feels like you’ve done nail art but all you’ve done, really, is polish your nails.

FTD:  What did you think of Michelle Obama’s gray nails at the DNC?

DL: She’s so beautiful! She has beautiful hands and beautiful nails. She’s very chic and sophisticated. Gray’s been sort of considered a neutral in the world of fashion. To me, I was happy that she did it, but I thought it was a bit edgy for the First Lady. I was very very happy to see it and I thought, ‘You go, Michelle!’ I love that people are talking about it because something like that, someone like the First Lady can wear something that is a little bit different than just a pink or red, it makes us all feel like it’s safe.
