Five Minutes With: Sally Hansen Nail Ambassador Tracylee

Backstage at Prabal Gurung spring 2013

At Prabal Gurung, two things were certain: models and editors alike were withering. It was the hottest day of New York Fashion Week and Gurung was showing at Pier 57, a vast warehouse space on the Westside Highway where many edgier brands opt to show. And on this day, it had become a veritable sauna, with guests such as Jenna Lyons, Brandon Holley, Kate Bosworth and Ken Downing using the show notes as impromptu hand fans to stave off the stifling heat.

Backstage, the temps remained just as high, but the nails were cool as could be. We caught up with Sally Hansen Nail Ambassador Tracylee to get the scoop on Prabal’s theatrical manicures.

Fashion Trends Daily: How long has Sally Hansen been working with Prabal Gurung?

Tracylee: This will be the fifth year. We’ve done polishes and polish strips for Prabal.

FTD: What are the colors for this season?

T: There are three colors, Angel Bite, Resurrection and Apparition, but we are only using Angel Bite in the show.

FTD: The nails look amazing.  What was Prabal trying to achieve with nails for the show?

T: Prabal wanted a blood-dipped fingernail, and I presented him with ten different designs.

FTD: How do you paint “dripping blood” on the models’ fingernails?

T: I use a striper brush, which has really long hairs on it and creates very nice stripes on the nail. You can get it at any arts and crafts store. I dip it into the Angel Bite and when you pull it out it holds that bead of drip, but I use that to make my blood drip. I dab that drip onto the nail and I release it and it creates that perfect round drop look.

I use the striper brush and I drag and pull to make a line. I do two or three on each nail, in varying heights. And then I connect those lines with a wavy pattern so it looks like the fingers were dipped.

FTD: Should we attempt this look at home or is it strictly runway only?

T: Nail art never has to be perfect. It’s fun. You make it your own and the mistakes are what make it yours. Go for it!

Just like the clothes that walked the runway, the limited edition Prabal Gurung for Sally Hansen nail colors will be available in-store next spring.
