Last year, Maison Martin Margiela made its debut into the world of fragrance with (untitled) by Maison Martin Margiela. While it was heady in concept, the fact is the fragrance is just that, a spritz of fresh green florals that just about anyone can wear. In stark contrast to the cerebral quality of the Maison’s ready-to-wear and couture, which requires Kate Lanphear-caliber fearlessness or the audacity of a street style blogger, the fragrance was for anyone willing to give it a try, from gray-haired ladies who lunch that wanted a little spray of rebellion or cooler-than-thou hipsters that wanted a piece of Margiela without spending four figures. The brand is branching out with a trio of new scents based on the ethos of the Replica line. Funfair Evening, Flower Market and Beach Walk are all meant to capture specific moments in time, and in the case of all three, it’s the fleeting scent of summer’s last days.

Maison Martin Margiela’s Replica line is a small collection of clothing that’s inspired by vintage clothing from around the world. As the Maison’s designers scour the globe for inspiration, they bring back a glove, shoe, coat or dress from say, Morocco, Chernobyl or Katmandu and the atelier’s workmen painstakingly recreate the item, stitch for stitch. The trio of fragrances take the same concept but instead of materials and craftsmanship, professional noses Jacques Cavallier and Marie Salamagne went out to capture very specific places at a very specific time. The result is a trio of scents that are meant to transport anyone who catches a whiff.

“I don’t like the notion of nostalgia. I prefer the idea of rediscovering those scents that have become part of us all,” said Cavallier.

Flower Market is meant to evoke a Parisian flower market, complete with the scent of crushed leaves underfoot. Combine that with dewy petals, fresh cut stems and flowers of all sorts and you’ve got a quintessential feminine floral. Beach Walk is a mix of bergamot, lemon, pink pepper, and ylang ylang, which sounds like a voodoo potion, but in reality, smells like the soft combination of ocean salt, warm sunbathers and summer sips. The final fragrance is Funfair Evening, which takes the Santa Monica pier’s iconic amusement park as inspiration and uses notes of apple, star anise, marshmallow accord, and warm amber to create the picture-perfect night at the 100-year-old landmark.

All three fragrances are available now at Margiela boutiques worldwide.
