When he was just a child, NARS’ creative director, Francois Nars, discovered the photography of Guy Bourdin in French Vogue. He credits those photographs as the inspiration for his goal of becoming a makeup artist, and well, if you’ve been to any Sephora store lately, you know how that turned out. This fall, Nars will bring the images and mood of Bourdin to life in a makeup collection inspired by his work. With new formulations and bold colors — all with Nars’ signature pigmentation and innovative technology — it’s sure to have beauty junkies and fans of photography revved up for the coming season.

Last year, the brand partnered with the Andy Warhol foundation for a huge collection of polishes, eye shadows and more — some bearing the artwork of Warhol and others bearing an actual image of the artist himself. This time, the look of the collection might be a little less dramatic, but Nars is upping the ante by debuting two new formulations. Cinematic eye shadow and cinematic lipstick both promise full, bold pigmentation and a new finish that’s bright, shiny and comfortable to wear. Bourdin was known for his work with shine, matte finishes and playing with light and dark (he was a protege of Man Ray, after all) so this collection is the perfect way to showcase these new finishes.

The capsule collection, which includes 16 different items, will debut at Nars’ Web site as well as Nars boutiques on October 15. Gifting options, which range from a collection of polishes to lip-stick shaped makeup bags and versatile eye-and-face palettes will be available November 1.

In addition to the Cinematic lipsticks and eye shadows, the collection will also include blushes — Nars’ most beloved product — and nail polishes. Exhibit A, one of the label’s most notorious blush shades, is being re-promoted with the Bourdin collection, naturally, being named after a book of Bourdin’s most famous works.

For holiday gifting, Sephora stores will be offering a blush palette featuring a mix of six hues. Nars’ most popular shades, such as Laguna bronzer and Orgasm blush will sit alongside new highlighting and blush options. There will also be a collection of miniature of the brand’s beloved lip pencils which includes both matte and glossy finishes.

Department stores and the Nars Web site will receive items such as a nail lacquer set, a full face palette which includes gloss, shadows, blush and bronzer as well as a special lacquered lip keepsake box. Whichever you choose (to keep or to gift, we won’t judge), the entire Bourdin collection is sure to add a bold stroke to your makeup this holiday season. Wear it well, readers!
