Try before you buy? You do it with clothes in the fitting room and at Sephora or department stores, you do get to swipe, sample and try out new products, but thanks to a pair of new apps, you won’t even have to leave your house if you want to try out a new makeup look or skincare regime. The ClearCam by Murad and L’Oreal Paris’ Makeup Genius apps let you virtually sample out skincare and makeup picks before you commit to real-life purchase. Plus, both of them let you share your results socially and up your selfie game, so get ready to vamp it up, because you’re about to look flawless.
The ClearCam by Murad app is out to make sure that all of your selfies are picture perfect. The free app lets you take a selfie and then see the results of Murad’s Acne Spot Fast Fix ($16) and Acne Clearing Solution ($39) in action. You can tap on your blemishes to spot treat them with Acne Spot Fast Fix’s combination of powerful Micronized Benzoyl Peroxide 3.5% and skin-soothing great burnet, allantoin and niacinamide or see a full faced time-lapse simulation of the results that you’d get from using the Acne Clearing Solution’s blend of salicylic acid 0.5%, queen of meadow extract, retinol and tea tree oil. After you’ve seen just how great your skin can look, you can add filters and share to your social media accounts right from the app and add the hashtag #itsallclear to join the app’s other users. Think it’s all just smoke and mirrors? Think again, because the results in the app are based on clinical trials, which reported 96% of Acne Clearing Solutions users saw clearer skin in just three days and Acne Spot Fast Fix users saw results in just one.

Launching last month, you’ve probably seen a few looks from L’Oreal Paris’ Makeup Genius app in your Instagram feed, but if you haven’t experienced the app for yourself, you’re in for an addictive treat that caters to beauty junkies everywhere.
“By combining our knowledge of consumers and the science of colours with technologies for monitoring facial expressions, we have been able to calculate the best possible algorithm capable of producing an extremely realistic colour-rendering in real time using just an iPhone camera,” said Guive Balooch, Director of the Connected Beauty Incubator at L’Oréal Research & Innovation.
Inside the app, there’s a face-detecting camera that lets you snap a selfie — or click a picture of your bestie — and add various L’Oreal Paris products onto the image. The app senses where your eyes, mouth and cheeks are to add color right where it belongs. Get creative and add a touch of dramatic liner, add bright, bold lips or go subtle with a more neutral look. L’Oreal Paris has even enlisted the talents of world renowned makeup artist Billy B to add a few looks of his own so that you can get a virtual makeover from a makeup master. The app lets you test out L’Oreal Paris products before you head out to the store to buy them. You can create a list of products right in the app to bring up the next time you’re headed to your local drugstore to get the goods. And of course you wouldn’t go through all the trouble without sharing it, right? The Makeup Genius app zaps the images right to your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more so you can share your looks in just a few swipes and taps.
