We’ve caught Pastel Fever over here at Fashion Trends Daily. And not just for this season’s buoyant, cotton-candy hues. We’re in love with lavender locks, specifically Nicole Richie’s new lavender hair. While Richie just cut her locks into a very current, edgy bob this week, she kept her lavender hue. And we love it even more shorter.

In fact, we’re so obsessed with it we cornered her at the Lucky FABB fashion and beauty blogger conference earlier this month to ask all about taking the purple plunge.

“Joel was my biggest supporter in doing it,” she said of her rocker husband Joel Madden. “He was like, ‘I think you should do it.’ He’s used to dyeing his hair all the time so he was the one who said, ‘I think you should do it.’ ”

But, it turns out the real inspiration for her look came from none other than Nicole’s six-year-old daughter Harlow, who also happens to be the little lady behind the name of Richie’s line, House of Harlow.

“Well my daughter picked it for me,” Richie said later to Lucky magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Eva Chen, who, you guessed it, also asked all about the hair. “She just asked if I would color my hair lavender. I did it for her.”

Aw sweet. An unexpected bonus of the new look? Nicole’s popularity has soared — at Harlow’s school, that is.

“I’m very popular at my daughter’s school,” she laughed. “All the kids love me and they think I’m a character in Frozen. It’s great. Everybody talks to me, it’s really nice.”

Kelly Osborne, Katy Perry, Ellie Goulding and more have all rocked the look. But ladies, be warned: Getting Nicole’s color involves starting at a platinum blonde and coloring pastel on top. And that means serious maintenance, as Nicole herself has discovered.

“The upkeep is pretty major,” she said. “It fades into different colors, but it’s fun.” If you can’t face the commitment, we suggest trying a temporary pastel streak or two with hair chalk. Or for the truly commitment phobic: Do like Lauren Conrad and just Photoshop your pastel coif instead.
