Pony Up: John Barrett Adds Ponytail Bar to his NY Salon

The John Barrett Salon

First it was the blow out bar. Then, the braid bar. Now, John Barrett (he of the original braid bar) is adding even more coiffing services to his menu. The NY mainstay and celeb fave (Blake Lively, Olivia Wilde and more have the man on speed dial, we’re sure!) is giving ladies more than just plaits: He’s offering a bevy of ponytails at his Fifth Avenue salon.

Like his famed braid bar, there are different ponies for every hair type, occasion and style. Six ponytails are offered on the service menu, but with the skillful hands of Barrett’s stylists, each and every one can be tweaked or teased to get you looking exactly as you want. Each stylist even customizes the pony to suit your face shape (high ponies are great for rounder faces and lower ones are more flattering for those with more narrow faces).

The ponies run the gamut. Sleek, smooth low ponies are great for special occasions whereas the more casual pony, a la Blake herself, can add instant cool to any summer ensemble. Clients can escape the summer heat (Barrett’s salon is located on the top floor of venerable department store Bergdorf Goodman) and re-enter the world anew with an effortless style that delivers huge impact.

Sure, you could gather up your locks and pony yourself, but the pros at the salon can add volume, curl your ends and disguise the elastic with your own hair — a quick, chic way to make any ponytail look more professional. The Ponytail Bar also offers topknots that can range from perfect, ballet-dancer precise to music festival-ready disheveled.

If you think a ponytail is childsplay, take a moment to remember that there’s a braid bar, too. For advanced styles, take the best of both. Barrett’s stylists can fuse together braids and ponytails, leaving you with more than just six choices. Accent to your pony with a strategically placed braid on either side of your face or weave your entire ponytail with a plait. Whichever style you choose, stave the summer heat and give your best Fashion Week outfits a trial run. We’re sure that this bar will be busier than any after-party when the tent goes up at Lincoln Center this September.
