To The Point: The Humble Pencil is Beauty’s Latest Trend

While some beauty brands are getting so technological that we wouldn’t be surprised if robotic arms sprouted from the packaging, a few big names are getting back to basics. The humble pencil is making a comeback in a big way, in everything from eye liners to eye shadows and lip liners. In the makeup world, pencils have grown to pretty proportions, making them go-tos this spring if you need a quick update for your makeup bag.

Clinique’s popular Chubby Stick ($16) franchise started off with lip pencils that had the ease of a balm (and the moisturizing properties, too) and just a hint of color. Then, the brand released Chubby Stick Intense ($16), which had a bigger dose of look-at-me pigment. Now, Clinqiue’s lab-coated crew is ready to introduce the new Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes ($16), a creamy, blendable shadow that makes your eye makeup as easy as coloring in a coloring book. The debut collection features a dozen shades which range from everyday neutrals to more smokey blues and purples, but each one delivers a sheer, slightly shimmering wash of color that’s requires little to no effort at all. The brand’s Web site suggests a trio of hues to achieve a well-rounded look, but we say one color from lashline to crease is all you need for on-the-go looks. If you want to glam it up, slide a deeper color into your crease and you’ve got an instant smokey eye with just a few swipes. Best of all, these pencils don’t need sharpening. Just twist from the bottom and you’ve got color that will last on your lids and in the pencil with no waste at all.

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color

Laura Mercier’s Caviar Eye Liner has been a makeup artist’s secret for years now. Some swear that it’s the only product that can stay true-to-color on the finicky waterline area, while others use the deep shades as a base to add depth to a dark eye look. Mercier’s taken the same texture as her beloved Caviar Eye Liner and created the Caviar Stick Eye Color ($24), a soft creamy shadow pencil that’s designed for easy looks with no makeup artist necessary. Just twist up the pencils, which come in soft pastels, neutrals and deeper colors for more dramatic looks, blend the colors onto your lid and you’re done. For a more high-impact look, pair any pencil with a darker Caviar liner and you’ll have a long lasting eye look that’s subtle, easy and sophisticated.

NARS Satin Lip Pencil

With the addition of the new NARS Satin Lip Pencils, the brand has created a triple threat of lip pencils. Following in the footsteps of the Velvet Matte and Velvet Gloss pencils, the Satin Lip Pencils ($25) draw a line right down the middle. Not quite glossy and not quite matte, these intense pencils deliver high-pigment colors in an easy-to-handle pencil form. NARS gave their Pinterest followers a sneak peek at the colors and even made the pencils available for purchase one week early to pinners, but the full line is now shoppable on the brand’s Web site. Each satiny, vitamin-enriched shade delivers color in a single swipe, so whether you opt for nude lips or high-impact fuchsia, every single one is true to form. The only downside is that you need a jumbo-sized pencil sharpener to keep these in tip-top shape. But we think that the fruits of your labor will show with every air kiss you give out.
