Misha Anderson on Woodley & Bunny’s First L.A. Store

In 2005, cult beauty emporium Woodley & Bunny opened its doors in Brooklyn, giving hard-core beauty devotees a new must-go-to spot to lay down the plastic on skincare and beauty goodies. But make no mistake: This is no Sephora. There is nary a classic department store brand or DiorShow mascara to be found. Instead, the beauty apothecary stocks hard-to-find niche labels, from Jemma Kid and Jouer to Malin + Goetz, Gascoigne & King candles and many more. Since its launch, Woodley & Bunny has become a must-visit stop during New York Fashion Week and the loyal clientele has become nearly evangelical about the beauty boutique.

Now, the dynamic duo behind the brand has just opened the first West Coast location on L.A.’s boutique-laden Third Street, with other niche beauty neighbors such as cult fragrance brand Le Labo, Benefit and more. While the L.A. outlet does not offer salon services like its Brooklyn sister, it will be launching a mini facial bar with hot towel treatments, which will be available in the coming weeks. We have a sweet spot for beauty and a sweet spot for Third Street since our Fashion Trends Daily’s founders live in the area. So, we couldn’t wait to get our beauty on with Woodley & Bunny co-founder Misha Anderson. She shared her favorite products with Fashion Trends Daily and why the grand opening of W&B L.A. is like coming home. We’re already planning our weekend Third-Street outing: Lunch at Joan’s, a cupcake at Magnolia and beauty products for dessert at Woodley & Bunny!

FTD: What made you want to open Woodley & Bunny, especially with so many different places to get beauty products?

Misha Anderson: We envisioned a salon and apothecary that were held to a higher standard and featured a tightly edited assortment of distinctly inspired products and services with a sense of exploration and discovery. For us, this concept includes a full-service, cutting-edge salon with professional, editorial-quality services and an apothecary, stocked with hard-to-find essentials from around the globe, including hair styling and skincare products, color cosmetics, fragrance and gifts.

FTD: What made you choose this particular spot for the L.A. store?

MA:  This is actually a homecoming for me, after living in L.A. for 10 years and then New York for the past eight.  I felt a true connection to L.A. and wanted to offer a solution to the void in the existing shopping experience here and bring the Brooklyn experience to West Third Street.

FTD: Since the store is so small, how do you decide what lines and products to carry?

MA: Our concept is one where shoppers can find sophisticated, luxurious and cool products that are super effective and best in category.

FTD: What are some of your can’t-live-without products at W&B?

MA:  BRAD Ultra Elastin cream is my go-to super hydrating moisturizer and is  perfect for travel. Sachajuan Dry Hair Shampoo is the only shampoo that tames my coarse, crazy curly hair.  Sentara All Weather Cream is my solution to parched skin, whether it is sunburn, windburn or any other irritation, it does the trick. The Gascoigne & King Candle in Paddignton is a modern blend of tulips and an earthy tuberose. I love it for spring.

FTD:  Speaking of spring, what are some spring trends for beauty and fashion that you’re loving?

MA: I love the pastel, sorbet shades that we are seeing on hair right now. The look is fun and fresh without being too dramatic. I am also into the dark, plum-hued lip! While this look is typically reserved for fall and winter, I like that it presents a twist on the ordinary.

FTD:  What are the other L.A. stops you make when you’re here?

MA: When I have time, I start my day with a hike up Runyon Canyon. The views are amazing! For a bite to eat, I am a fan of Joan’s on Third (which is right by our L.A. apothecary) and Real Food Daily.
