Mattel is teaming up with a trio of retailers to push its latest project: a Barbie-inspired line of apparel and accessories. The project, which will bring Barbie’s signature style to Forever21, Lord & Taylor and L.A.’s celeb-beloved Wilfox. Each retailer is focusing on a specific decade of Barbie style. Wildfox’s capsule collection will focus on ’80s Barbie looks while the ’90s will be loud and clear at Forever21. Lord & Taylor will focus on the more conservative and vintage looks of the ’50s and ’60s in their collection. Together, the entire collaboration will bring to light Barbie as a brand, not just a toy.

“I think what people pay attention to is Barbie the toy, and what we’re trying to focus on is that Barbie is a brand much bigger than an 11-inch fashion doll,” Jessica Dunne, Mattel’s general manager and senior vice president, consumer products told WWD. “This fall really is the start of what is a multiyear focus and priority for us.”

The collections will hit stores in the coming weeks, with the first store, Forever21, receiving the first releases. The fast-fashion retailer will carry the bulk of the collab, with 29 pieces available in many of the chain’s retail locations across the globe as well as online. The ’90s inspired collection features text and graphics in pink, white, black and grey across accessories, sleepwear, cosmetics, outerwear and more. Ringing up between $3.90 and $24.90, it’s fall’s most affordable collaboration and one that’s perfectly tailored for its shoppers, who might find Altuzarra for Target too mature and Alexander Wang’s forthcoming collection for H&M too athletic for everyday wear.

L.A.’s Wildfox is no stranger to throwback inspiration, which is why they’re the perfect label to join in on Mattel’s walk down memory lane. The resort collection that they’ve created for the collab, The Wildfox Dreamhouse, has just eight items on offer, but they’re all must-haves for fans of Barbie and Wildfox alike. Wilfox sought to re-create actual outfits that Malibu Barbie wore in the ’80s, so expect plenty of retro-inspired touches in the sportswear, swimwear, denim and sunglasses (including a pink circular pair plucked right from the dashboard of Barbie’s pink convertible) that will be released on Nov. 15. The collection will be stocked in Wildfox’s retail partners, including Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Fred Segal and more.

“Barbie meant a lot to me growing up, and with this company I am basically playing grown-up Barbie all the time,” said Kimberley Gordon, Wildfox cofounder and creative director. “I thought it would be fun to imagine if those [dolls] were real, and to bring the Barbie Dream House to life.”

Lord & Taylor will focus its offerings on sleepwear. Ranging from $32 and $46, the chain’s top 10 stores will offer the more conservative ’50s and ’60s inspired lounge pieces. The department store will debut the collection Sept. 14. There’s no word on whether or not the capsule collection will be available online, so if you’re feeling the need to slip into something a little glamorous at night, you might have to enlist the help of your BFFs in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
