Party like it’s 1992, because cartwheeling designer Betsey Johnson is bringing back her greatest hits. In the heyday of her brand, there wasn’t any girl who wouldn’t kill to get her hands on a piece of Betsey Johnson’s punk-infused girly-grunge world. Today, she’s still going strong, but with a focus on accessories and shoes. That may change, because the always amazing designer is teaming up with Urban Outfitters to bring a collection of her favorite frocks out of the history books and right back onto the racks with the Betsey Johnson Vintage for Urban Outfitters collection.
“All eras of fashion come back around and the ’90s are hip and current now,” Betsey Johnson said. “They are some of my favorite styles from my favorite era and they look as great today as they did in the ’90s…except Urban is doing them at much better price point than I did!”
During the height of grunge, there was no look cooler than a super feminine Betsey Johnson frock paired with a flannel overshirt or a beat up biker jacket, and thanks to the offerings in the new collection, you can relive the glory days of grunge with authentic pieces pulled from Johnson’s archives. Painstakingly recreated, each dress has all the signatures that Johnson fans loved — overblown florals, mini Liberty print roses and a vintage feel that pairs perfectly with Doc Martens and demure Mary Janes alike. The dresses even have very now, very current midi and maxi lengths, meaning you might just have found the maxi you’ll be living in all summer long.
“Skull bomber jacket, vintage jean jackets, sloppy grandpa cardigans, combat boots, Mary Janes,” Johnson said when asked what she’d pair these old-is-new-again pieces. “Fingerless gloves, dog collars, funky wrist cuffs, brass knuckle rings, rhinestone tiaras, all that fun ’90s rocker paraphernalia.”
Basically, everything and anything, because each dress channels Betsey’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” DNA, only this time, you won’t be spending your entire paycheck on a single dress. In the ’90s, you’d expect to pay upwards of $300 for each one, but thanks to Urban Outfitters, the pieces don’t ring up over $150, which might even be less than you’d pay for Betsey Johnson vintage at a consignment store. The ’90s might be having their time in the spotlight now, but there’s always something right about having fun with your wardrobe, and when it all boils down, that’s what the Betsey Johnson brand is all about — petticoats and all.
