Dodgers and the MLB Draft Hello Kitty and OPI

While some collaborations leave us scratching our heads (Cynthia Rowley Pampers?), others seem so out of left field that they are actually outrageously fun. Case in point: Major League Baseball has enlisted the help of Sanrio’s resident feline for a line of accessories and nail polish’s biggest name, OPI, is joining in with its own collection of Major League inspired shades.

L.A.’s boys in blue have had played host to Hello Kitty before. Last season, Dodger Stadium offered Hello Kitty blankets during a game, and pardon the pun, but it was a home run. Fans clamored over the blankets bearing Sanrio’s MVP. This year, the collab expands not only in scope but also to other teams. In addition to Los Angeles, the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants will also be getting Sanrio merchandise. The merchandise, which runs the gamut from decorative pillows to keychains, pins and pens, will be available at each team’s respective stadium stores (and the MLB’s online shop) as well as sporting goods stores and mass retailers. But if you want something truly covetable, snag tickets to the Dodgers home games on June 3rd and 10th, when special edition bobbleheads and travel mugs will be handed out to loyal fans.

“Major League Baseball understands the importance of female fans in the growth and success of our sport,” said MLB senior vice president of licensing Howard Smith. “And so we continuously seek new opportunities to diversify our portfolio of licensed offerings to target this extensive fan base.”

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but Marilyn probably wasn’t talking about a baseball diamond. And while OPI’s no stranger to collaboration,  this year marks the brand’s very first venture with a professional sports league. The OPI Fashion Plate collection, which is available now, draws shades from some of baseball’s most beloved teams. We spy shades similar to Dodger blue, Giants orange and a classic red shade that could be associated with a handful of different MLB teams.

“Enjoying a baseball game is one of America’s most celebrated pastimes,” explains Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Co-Founder & Executive Vice President.  “For many years, men dominated the stands, but today, more and more women can be found in the crowds. Baseball boasts a lot of female fans looking to demonstrate their love of the game through fashion – from trendy, feminine sports apparel to themed accessories. Now, women can wear the limited edition MLB Collection nail lacquers to show support from head (and fingers) to toe!”

The seven-shade collection is meant to give gals one more way to show their team spirit, though with this limited color collection, we’re sure a few fans will feel left out. No worries, however, because if OPI’s track record is anything to go by, the brand’s more than happy to expand on a successful collection, just like it did with the Muppets collection and the Mariah Carey collection. For now, we’ll be proud to support our boys in blue with a little nail art — and there’s no easier way to celebrate a win (or erase the shame of a loss) than a fresh mani.
