We remember when we first really took note of Pinterest, the addictive online inspiration board platform. It was during the Lucky FABB blogger conference in fall of 2011 when Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann spoke on one of the panels. At that time Pinterest was still a very nascent start-up with intriguing possibilities, and the audience of fashion and beauty bloggers was just learning about this newfangled tool and listening in politely to a shy guy from a Silicon Valley start-up.
The thing was, that platform, which Pinterest designer Sahil Lavingia described to Tech Crunch in 2011 as belonging to a category he described as “self-expression engines” (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare among them), already had over 1.5 million uses in its beta phase! We were certainly curious enough to give it a try that fall of 2011 after meeting Silbermann at FABB, so we trotted back to the hotel room later and requested an invitation so we could just “check it out.”
Whoa! Flash forward one year, one serious Pinterest addiction later, one company that everyone was talking about, and the next thing you know everyone from brides-to-be to interior designers to magazines and fashion brands were sucked into its wildly addictive fun, and “pin it” was inducted into the social media lexicon.
Like other social media platforms, half the fun is the voyeuristic nature of it and participating in what others are communicating or, rather, expressing. And, in the case of Pinterest, that connection is a visual, vibrant and now vital tool for fashion brands. We love to see what’s inspiring some of the biggest names in the fashion industry, so we’ve curated a list of the top 20 fashion boards to follow on Pinterest from some of our faves. “Repin” to your heart’s content, and remember to check out Fashion Trends Daily’s Pinterest Page, too, for our favorite trends, looks and seasonal inspirations. Happy Pinning!
Our favorite board: Coach Archives
Young girls may know Coach as a gateway brand into the luxury world, but what they don’t know is that it’s a heritage brand with deep roots in leather working and also happens to be one of the most social-media savvy fashion brands int he biz. Sure, they’re steeped in tradition and have decades of archives to draw from, but thanks to designer Reed Krakoff, they’ve embraced everything from bloggers to Facebook and, yes, Pinterest. Browse the brand’s boards for a peek into the latest collections and some of the greatest hits throughout the years. (We’re loving the Legacy: ColorTag boards) . And with the men’s line blowing up, there are great gift ideas for dads and more in their Portraits of Modern Men board.
2. Club Monaco
Our favorite board: Culture Club
While Club Monaco might have been a bit slower out of the gate when it comes to the Internet (they’ve only just recently launched e-commerce), you know that everything they do is on point when it comes to styling and execution. Like their perfectly curated brand, their Pinterest boards are a tightly edited collection of stars spotted in Club Monaco’s wares, the brand’s latest collections and more. Our favorite, however, is Club Monaco’s series of Culture Club boards, which transports you away from the confines of bricks-and-mortar to exotic locales, to check out decadent food and other inspirations from around the globe. Who knew a brand once known primarily for its black and white collections was so colorful behind the scenes?
Our favorite board: On the Road Again
If you’re unfamiliar with Lands’ End’s Canvas line, the brand’s Pinterest board is a great way to get acquainted with the less buttoned-up, less lumberjack-inspired line from Lands’ End. A menswear favorite for the traditional set and the more modern man alike, Canvas is a more laid-back, weekend-ready line for guys and girls that embrace Americana. The Pinterest boards run the gamut from road-trip photos to catalog images, which gives you the perfect packing list for your next trip up the coast or in the Adirondacks.
Our favorite board: SHOES (that make us swoon)
Venerable department store, mecca of high-end style, inspiration for a book… Bergdorf is all those thing and digitally savvy. Their daily pins, which feature the season’s most coveted shoes and bags, make us swoon and (almost) pull out our wallets. Alongside couture accessories, BG posts picks from the latest collections and outlines the season’s latest trends with a board for each of the hottest looks from the runway.
5. Tory Burch
Our favorite board: TB ♥ Tomboy
It’s not surprising that Tory Burch’s boards are full of prints, color and global inspiration. What is surprising? Burch’s photographer’s eye. Her images from Marrakech, India and Myanmar are magazine-ready, and they give you a peek into how she always manages to integrate a global influence into her collections. In addition to photos from her travels, you can see Burch pieces styled just so, behind-the-scenes peeks into her presentations and runway shows and of course, photos of the always beautiful Burch herself.
Our favorite board: We. Love. Stripes.
No, our Menswear Editor doesn’t curate the boards for J. Crew, but seeing stripes, sailor motifs and prep on every board would lead you to believe it. Jenna’s team treats the Pinterest presence like an extension of the brand’s perennially-popular catalog, so you not only get to see how every piece gets styled, you get a sneak peek at the brand’s archives and inspirations (everything from Nantucket to Normandy). So while you already dog-ear your catalogs for style inspiration, think of these digital snapshots as your own lookbook to take ideas from every time you get dressed.
Our favorite board: Pick Your Poison
They’re known for denim, but what you don’t know is that 7 for all Mankind is a fashion brand that loves fashion. Their boards pull from big names such as Burberry, but it makes total sense when you actually get to your own closet and pair your statement pieces with your go-to denim. They’ve got images from across the country (the USA is all about blue jeans, after all), but what we can’t get enough of is their decadent collection of reptile-skinned picks that draw from fashion, beauty and more.
Our favorite board: Topshop Loves Details
With Topshop expanding to the West Coast and into Nordstrom stores nationwide, it’s no surprise they’ve upped the ante online, too. They’ve got images from their fashion show (under the label Topshop Unique) as well as celebs wearing their clothes and festivalgoers — Brit brands love music festivals — vamping for the camera in Topshop’s signature prints and chunky knits.
Our favorite board: charm colorfully
Whimsical, colorful, joyful. That’s what Kate Spade New York is all about — and they’ve got it in spades (we couldn’t resist) on their Pinterest boards. Vintage records, retro prints from the ’60s and ’70s and more abound alongside snaps from the red carpet and the latest from their collabs (Garance Doré and more). And since ladies from Palm Beach to Palm Springs can’t get enough of Spade’s brand of living, there’s plenty of home inspiration, too.
10. C. Wonder
Our favorite board: California Dreaming
So we’re biased when it comes to our favorite C. Wonder board, but when it comes to sunshine, beach days and endless summers, the left coast just has the East Coast beat. But we won’t deny that monogramming is an East Coast staple and C. Wonder has the market on that cornered. But you won’t find catalog shots of their most popular totes and accessories. Instead, you’ll get boards with vintage photography, worldly architecture and more. While you can’t monogram a Frank Lloyd Wright building, you can snag C. Wonder driving mocs to walk around it in.
Our favorite board: Our Personal Shopper’s Picks
If you love Anthro’s boho chic mix of homegoods and apparel, you’ll love the way they’ve carried that combo into their Pinterest boards. Mixing things from their own catalogs and Web site with bloggers’ images, editorials and more, they’ve put together a mix that’s signature Anthropologie. Personal Shopper’s Picks include big names such as N’East and Oh Joy’s Joy Cho. Together, it’ll inspire you to mix high and low, layer everything you’ve got and look at your surroundings through a hazier, more relaxed lens a la Anthro. Just sit back and take it in.
Our favorite board: ASOS <3′s: Summer
As expected, ASOS’s online presence is just as overwhelming as their online offerings. They’ve got a bevy of boards that span fashion, beauty and lifestyle. All of their latest looks are online as well as looks from the latest music festivals and fashion week from both sides of the Atlantic. The fast-fashion retailer also makes it easy to buy right from their pins (click on them to go right to the ASOS site) so you can stock your closet with just a few clicks.
13. Warby Parker
Our favorite board: Fresh New Frames
Leave it to a brand that revolutionized optical shopping to embrace the Internet. Browse the brand’s latest frames — our favorite part of their Pinterest presence — or check out bloggers and celebs wearing Warby Parker styles. We love their travel photos and pictures of New York alike, but what we love the most is that the brand lets you in on their operations with behind-the-scenes photos of prototypes, their off-site events at South by Southwest and more.
Our favorite board: Our Latest Lookbook
J. Crew’s sister brand one-ups big sis by being more present on the Pinterest scene. The young ones always embrace tech first, right? Madewell gives you a look at all their latest styles, both styled on models and from shots straight from their Web site. They also scour the web for great vintage images and documented their cross-country denim tour. Let big sis be serious and worry about pencil skirts and the First Lady, Madewell’s taking it easy and forging its own way in the digital world.
15. Official Versace
Our favorite board: Versace World of Prints
The Versace Pinterest account is everything you’d imagine for a brand that exudes excess and luxury. There are images from Donatella’s latest shows (for men and women), but we love the archival images from the days of Gianni. There’s also a full album of celebs clad in Versace, including Angelina Jolie’s famed leg-baring Academy Awards gown and front-row pictures of Fan Bingbing, Chase Crawford, Rachel Bilson and more.
16. Ralph Lauren
Our favorite board: RL Style Guide
While there was a faux Pinterest account for Ralph that was more confusing than the whole made in China Olympic debacle, Lauren finally got his official account up and running. In no time, he managed to gain a slew of followers that love his preppy roots and sophisticated styling. We love his Style Guide, which outlines the season’s must-have items as well as the latest pins from his runway shows.
17. Diane Von Furstenburg (DvF)
Our favorite board: DVF | Prints
Of course our favorite board from DvF would be her collection of prints! Animal, geometric, psychedelic, there’s something for everyone, especially when DvF puts her signature prints on her signature piece: the wrap dress. From the First Lady herself to working women and just about every socialite we can think of, no woman can resist the siren call of Diane. And every time we get a new pin, it’s a little look into the world (and history) of the brand.
18. Skaist Taylor
Our favorite board: Self Control is Not Our Friend
You know the ladies behind Skaist Taylor as Pam and Gela, or the designing duo behind megabrand Juicy Couture. But now that they’ve left the world of scottie dogs and velour tracksuits, they’ve got a decidedly eccentric label that they’re proud to put their names on. We love their irreverent pins, the way they weave sunny Cali lifestyle into all that they do and how these two hometown girls stay true to their over-the-top tendencies. With critics extolling their first collection and retailers loving everything from shaggy furs to Stevie Nicks meets Bianca Jagger leathers and tailoring, we can’t wait to see what they’re pinning next.
19. DKNY PR Girl
Our favorite board: donna karan new york
DKNY PR Girl already wears the crown of the Twitterverse, so it’s no surprise that she’s got one of the most dynamic, darling and well-curated Pinterest boards around. In addition to pinning memorable photos from Donna’s advertising campaigns, she’s got all of DKNY’s collabs covered as well as letting us see all of the adorable DKNY PR Girl sketches in one place.
Our favorite board: illustration.
Peeking into the world of Oscar de la Renta? Don’t mind if we do. We were entranced when OscarPRGirl live-pinned the bridal show and every time we need some inspiration ourselves, we check out Oscar’s illustrations for a jolt to shake up the writer’s block. Like Oscar’s collections, the boards at OscarPRGirl are pretty much flawless, but you would expect nothing less from a rep for a label such as Oscar.
