2012 CFDA Awards To Be Broadcast On Style.com

First it was the Met Ball and now it’s CFDA Awards: Fashion is continuing to move from the runways and red carpets to your very own screen. For the first time ever, the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) will be streaming its annual awards ceremony on Style.com. Mark your calendars for June 5th, the day after the Lincoln Center festivities, and watch as the fashion industry honors its luminaries and up-and-comers.

“We are thrilled to be able to share American fashion’s biggest night with the public for the first time and to be working with Style.com on this incredible project,” said Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA. “This is an amazing opportunity to expand our audience as we open this exclusive industry event to fashion lovers around the world. It is not to be missed.”

Leading up to the stream, Style.com will be posting exclusive content such as slide shows from past ceremonies and Q&As with this year’s designers.

For the last 50 years, the CFDA has been handing out awards celebrating the best of American fashion. Winners have included fashion megastars such as Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan and more, but the awards ceremony is also known for congratulating smaller brands and emerging designers, too. The CFDA’s president, Diane von Furstenberg, will oversee the festivities, which include giving honors to Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons (she snagged the International Award) and Tommy Hilfiger, who will be receiving the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.

The CFDA also gives out the Fashion Icon Award every year to an individual with individual style that’s inspiring and unique. This year there’s another first: Johnny Depp will be the first male to ever take the honor, putting him in the company of Lady Gaga (class of 2011), Sarah Jessica Parker (’04) and Iman (’10).

This year’s nominees for menswear and womenswear include established brands and newer ones, too. The night’s womenswear prizes pit Marc Jacobs — a repeat winner — against the guys of Proenza Schouler and the petite powerhouse Olsen twins. If the twins take home the award, it may give a huge boost of legitimacy to celebrity brands such as Victoria Beckham and pave the way for even more celeb-designed labels. The menswear awards include Simon Spurr (The label, not the man — he left his namesake line earlier this year.), southern gent Billy Reid and NY-favorite Patrick Ervell.

Irene Neuwirth

Emerging designers are nominated for the Swarovski awards, though a few of the names are already established in their own ways. Pamela Love, who took home a runner-up prize for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, is up against fellow jeweler Irene Neuwirth and new-kid-on-the-block shoe designer Tabitha Simmons. Womenswear designers up for the honors include Joseph Altuzarra, the designers of Creatures of the Wind and the duo behind Suno NY.
