Leave it to a group of bloggers to pull out every stop and convene in one place sporting the latest trends. At Lucky magazine’s inaugural FABB West (they’ve been hosting a fashion and beauty blogger conference in New York for two years now) held in L.A. this spring, everything from searing brights to yacht-ready stripes were on display. Not only were the bloggers wearing summer’s hottest season’s trends, the guest speakers, which included designers and celebs such as Zac Posen and Jessica Alba alongside fashion heavyweights Janie Bryant and Jeff Rudes were showing off in this season’s must-haves. While the bloggers brought their fashion A-game well ahead of the warm, summer months, we weren’t quite ready to whip out all our best and brightest. But it feel just right now and, dare we say, fab! Check out some of our favorite picks.
Before the festivities at Lucky FABB, which included everything from panels featuring bloggers, designers and brand ambassadors to talks geared to the business of blogging, guests were treated to a blogger brunch at Santa Monica’s Viceroy Hotel. Designed by interior savant-turned-designer Kelly Wearstler, the hotel’s bold colors and patterns were the perfect backdrop for bright, saturated hues. From blazers in Yves Klein blue to minty greens, it was a rainbow of neons and brights. Later in the day, the bloggers celebrated at Wearstler’s flagship boutique, giving each guest a chance to browse her home goods and her latest collection.
Not only were we seeing brights, the attendees were taking their colors and sporting them in patterns that ranged from demure dots to sailor stripes and bold zigzags. Mixing patterns might not be for everyone, but whether you want to mix them in with solids or just play with scale, there’s no easier way to make a big impact than to throw on stripes or spots.
On stage, speakers such as Mad Men‘s Kiernan Shipka and Jessica Alba (who was speaking about her eco-baby venture The Honest Company), opted for different spins on ikat. Shipka, who mentioned her love of Gilt Group flash sales, was wearing Oscar de la Renta’s bright poppy-hued ikat. Alba took a different take on the trend, opting for ikat jeans and a trompe l’oeil menswear-inspired sweater. While we won’t hold our breath waiting for Alba to release a line of ikat diapers for the Honest Company, we love that she embraces color on herself and for her company. The cute floral patterns she uses on her products would look equally chic on a pair of cropped pants as they do on her sunscreens, lotions and hand sanitizer.
Trail blazers such as Randi Zuckerberg took to the stage, but there were guys and girls alike blazing in sportcoats. Designer Zac Posen (who’s known for his extensive collection of vintage suits and tuxedos) dressed down a menswear staple, the double-breasted suit, by cuffing his sleeves and wearing his jacket open, while Mad Men stylist Janie Bryant mixed a hyper feminine, lacy slipdress with a repp-stripe blazer. Also borrowing from the boys? Our very own Michelle Dalton Tyree, who had a pocket square proudly puffing from her own jacket.
