Andre Leon Talley, former editor-at-large for Vogue, former America’s Next Top Model judge and general man about town curated an exhibit that’s currently at the Savannah College of Art and Design on the work of his friend Oscar de la Renta. But while that exhibit is intimate look at over 70 pieces from the designer’s work for his closest friends, ALT will be curating a larger exhibition at San Francisco’s De Young museum next year, bringing the late designer’s work to San Francisco’s fashion plates and de la Renta’s fans. The exhibition is set to run from February 27 through May 30, 2016, and will be the first major exhibition of the designer’s work since his death.

“I am honored and excited to be the curator of the definitive Oscar de la Renta retrospective at exhibition at the de Young Museum,” Talley said in a press release. “My goal is to highlight the extraordinary depth of Oscar’s creative aesthetic from his earliest designs for Jane Derby throughout the five decades of his remarkable career.”

The Oscar de la Renta exhibition will be feature over 100 pieces from the de la Renta archives as well as the designer’s family. Spanning five decades of work, the exhibition will be separated into four different periods, starting with Oscar’s beginnings in the Dominican Republic and continuing with his work in Spain. The exhibit will continue with his work at a few of fashion’s biggest houses (Balmain and Lanvin included) before starting his own label and developing a relationship with celebrities, politicians and royalty. The clothes on display will be culled from the designer’s personal collection in addition to pieces sourced from collectors from around the world and the Fine Arts Museums’ own costume collection.

Oscar’s retrospective isn’t the first fashion exhibit that has come to the De Young. Previously, the museum has hosted The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk (2012), Balenciaga and Spain (2011), Yves Saint Laurent (2008–2009) and Vivienne Westwood: 36 Years in Fashion (2007). The exhibit isn’t the designer’s debut in San Francisco, either. Ever year, the house of de la Renta hosts a fashion show at Lake Tahoe for the Keep Tahoe Blue fundraiser and one of the designer’s biggest clients, novelist Danielle Steel, calls the city home.

“Both our company and our family are proud that the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are organizing the first full-scale retrospective of Oscar’s work,” said Oscar de la Renta CEO Alex Bolen.
