While you may know Nordstrom as a go-to spot for all of your fashion needs (designer denim; contemporary labels; shoes, shoes and more shoes; awesome in-house labels; Topshop and Topman; that killer Anniversary Sale; the list goes on and on), it’s never been a place you’d go to for under-the-radar labels and up and coming boutique brands. They’re called boutique brands for a reason, after all. But thanks to Olivia Kim, Nordstrom’s director of creative projects and the fashion wunderkind that’s helping the standby department store bring in cool concepts and fresh brands via her Pop-In concept (Warby Parker, for one), Nordstrom is getting SPACE, a unique retail concept that’s bringing little-known labels to the masses. Nordstrom’s Westfield San Francisco Centre is the only spot in California getting a special Space installation, so Angelenos will have to fly to our neighbors up north to get a taste.

“I want it to be a place of inspiration and education. A lot of these pieces are new and directional, but I want it to always feel inclusive. Space is a part of the Nordstrom ethos of offering the best of what’s out there,” Kim said in a statement.

The special Space department sits alongside the store’s designer collection, but it couldn’t be further away in terms of concept: the mannequins are pink, the furniture is conceptual, there are neon signs and Space Ambassadors are on hand to guide shoppers through the labels.

And it’s a full-on, head-to-toe offering, not just a few frocks and jeans. Shoppers can get everything from occasion dresses that will definitely stand out in a sea of LBDs to Japanese denim and unique handbags at Space, knowing that they’re snagging pieces that aren’t something they’ll spot on other people everywhere they go. And another bonus? There’s no geographic specificity. Labels that Kim has brought into Space include Faustine Steinmetz, Isa Arfen, Marques’Almeida, Adieu, Tricot Comme des Garçons, Rosetta Getty, Sarah & Sebastian, Simone Rocha, Anthony Vaccarello, Acne Studios, Edie Parker and more, which hail from different corners of the globe.

With Nordstrom’s location at The Grove recently receiving a facelift (what’s more L.A. than that?) and several of the department store’s most lucrative locations in SoCal, it’s only a matter of time before Space makes its debut down on our turf. Can’t make it to The City? Other Space locations include Chicago, Vancouver and Nordstrom’s flagship Seattle location. Thankfully, you can shop Kim’s edit online at www.nordstrom.com without having to book a flight. Thank goodness for the Internet.
