Drink up Fall’s Hottest Hue: Oxblood. Our Top Picks for all Budgets!

Club Monaco Elsa Pant

Club Monaco Elsa Pant

Living in Southern California means that we don’t gauge our seasons by temperature. Rather, our barometer for seasonal change comes via the shipments of pre-fall into our favorite shopping hot spots. Though we might still be riding a heat wave for the next few weeks, we’re loving the crispy, autumnal look of this season’s go-to color: Oxblood. Call it wine if you’re too squeamish, but whatever you do, don’t forgo updating your wardrobe with a dash of the deep hue.

Designers such as Céline’s Phoebe Philo and Clare Waight Keller of Chloé showed oxblood pieces in their collections and so, too, did Gucci and Ralph Lauren. We love the color’s nod to traditional huntsman’s gear, private school uniforms and its quiet elegance (maybe that’s why it’s a favorite among royals). Go big with a statement-making pant or start small with just a slick of the color on your lips.

Club Monaco takes a bold approach to the trend with the Elsa Pant ($149.50). Paired with more neutral pieces (like they showed in their most recent lookbook) it’s the perfect piece to weather the change in seasons, so to speak. It’s also cut just like a pair of skinny jeans, so you’ll be comfortable but look a little more dressed up. If you’re not feeling the Oxblood option, it’s also available in black and an array of other on-trend colors.

Rachel Rachel Roy Quilted Satchel

For a smaller dose of it, we love the Rachel Rachel Roy Quilted Satchel ($89, available at www.rachelroy.com), which combines two hues of the on-trend color in one take-everywhere shape. A pick from Roy’s lower-priced line (it’s available at Macy’s as well as Rachel’s own Web site), it will give you statement bag status without designer It-bag prices. The colorblocked bag — still a big trend for the fall — is big enough to hold all your daily necessities without weighing you down with cumbersome hardware. And while some designers hawk bags and don’t wear them, Rachel’s often seen carrying her designs. Don’t believe us? Just check her Instagram account.

YSL Rouge Volupte in Forbidden Burgundy

YSL Rouge Volupte in Forbidden Burgundy

When the temps drop, one thing that always comes out of hiding is dark lips. There’s something always right about pulling out a deeper, vampier color when summer’s last long day has faded. But we know from experience that a deep, dark lip isn’t exactly the most user friendly. From complicated application (apply, blot, apply, powder, blot, etc.) to clandestine teeth checks in every available reflective surface, it can be high maintenance. The solution: YSL Rouge Volupte ($34 at Sephora stores). Not only does it have a mirror on the top of its gilt tube, it’s a more sheer formula than many, meaning there’s less room for error and less maintenance, too/ Just slick on a few strokes and you’ll be set.

J. Crew Collection Ainsley High-heel Boots

J. Crew Collection Ainsley High-heel Boots

Want to add just a touch of menswear-inspired footwear to your fall wardrobe but can’t give up the height (and confidence) that heels give you? Try the J. Crew Collection Ainsley High-heel boots ($450), which combine classic men’s footwear details such as a tassel and toe stitching with a more feminine height (four sturdy inches). The color is more than just on-trend. It goes with everything your regular black or brown options would pair with. And being that it’s from J. Crew’s more exclusive Collection range, this pair is crafted in Italy from buttery soft leather. We’re melting just looking at them.

3.1 Philip Lim Leather-sleeved Silk Crepe de Chine Dress

And our number one must-have? The 3.1 Phillip Lim Leather-sleeved Silk Crepe de Chine Dress ($995, available at Net-a-Porter) is our pick for the ultimate seasonal splurge. The athletic-inspired burgundy lamb leather will keep you warm (no need for a jacket) while the free-flowing silk is clean and simple. The comfortable creation begs for accessorizing, but we can see it standing on its own if you just want to add a pair of booties and a simple clutch. And as cliché as it sounds, it really does go from day to night with nary a change. It’s neutral enough to play nice with any of your go-tos and the dark colors mean you can wear it deep into winter’s coldest nights.

Now doesn’t that sound almost sensible? Almost.
