Holy Smokes! Perforations Are a Cut Above

Prabal Gurung Resort 2012

Prabal Gurung Resort 2012

It’s not an optical illusion. Designers high (think Alaïa) and low (La Perla’s underpinnings) are showing collections shot through with laser cuts and intricate cutouts. From ladylike skirts to bags and even lingerie, every fabrication is getting the perforated treatment.

Prabal Gurung Cutout Polka-Dot Silk-Gazar Pencil Skirt

Prabal Gurung Cutout Polka-Dot Silk-Gazar Pencil Skirt ($925)

For his resort collection, Prabal Gurung used this laser-cut polka dot fabric on everything from basics like this pencil skirt to floor-grazing ball-skirts. Some of it was lined (like this quirky skirt) and with others, the holes gave you a peek to models’ legs and more. We’d go with the lined one for everyday. Whimsical and wearable, it’s an instant injection of cool.

If a full-on polka-dot skirt proves too much, then Diane von Furstenburg’s tank top is a more subtle nod to the trend. Each scalloped accent is cut open to reveal a deep blue crepe lining, giving this tank an anything-but-basic twist.

Alaia Perforated Leather Tote

Alaia Perforated Leather Tote

Alaïa Perforated Leather Tote ($3,380)

Classic shape. Classic pattern. Thoroughly modern technique.  Give your go-to bag an update with perforated detailing. This Alaïa tote blends traditional function with a fashion-forward cutout treatment. The circle pattern gives this tote an airy feeling that will endure long after you’ve hung up your perforated skirt.

La Perla Lace-Trimmed Perforated Leather Corset Dress ($2,815)

You might think that La Perla is the go-to brand for nice girls that need naughty things, but think again. This form-fitting number features lace, perforated panels and curve-flattering seams. Instead of giving a peek here and a peek there like our other picks, this baby leaves little to the imagination.

And for the guys (we think our last pick will find favor among the fellas, too) Dolce & Gabbana sent out a fisherman-themed collection for Spring 2012. With net-woven sweaters, jackets and mesh-paneled shorts, it was a high-fashion take on fisherman’s wharf standbys. We love this take on a classic golf jacket — though we’re not sure how many golfers we know will think that this cutout leather zip-up is a hole in one!
