L.A.’s Broken English Jewelry Expands East to New York City

L.A.’s Laura Freedman has carved a niche out for herself and her store, Broken English, by offering up some of the coolest and most unique jewelry labels all under one roof. The Brentwood Country mart location is a celeb favorite, culling together trend-driven jewelry, classic pieces and more to add a little bit of sparkle to the L.A. style scene. But the City of Angels couldn’t contain Freedman for long, because she’s opening up shop in New York, officially bringing her bling biz bicoastal.

The new Broken English location in New York sits on Crosby, one of the buzziest shopping stretches in SoHo, but it was thanks to one of Freedman’s friends that she could even snag a space in the popular neighborhood. Instead of opening up a storefront, Freedman is leasing out an area of the AllSaints location on Crosby Street. How did she procure that prime real estate? She can count Lyndon Lea, co-founder of Lion Capital, among her friends, and he just so happened to acquire 76% of AllSaints back in 2011. So the two decided to team up for the unique retail idea, noting that the two stores both shared a similar ethos and aesthetic. Freedman’s space spans exactly 518 square feet and is outfitted with custom Carrera marble and brass vitrines as well as antique French display cases.

“There is a real lack in the market, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to come to New York,” Freedman told WWD. “[Broken English] is really a fresh approach to a jewelry store. There’s a lot of flagship stores for jewelers separately, but there isn’t really a jewelry store.”

Just like her cozy L.A. store, the New York Broken English store is small, but packed full of great finds from designer labels such as New York’s own Pamela Love, popular labels Anita Ko, Deborah Pagani, Jacquie Aiche and Colette. The SoHo spot will carry a few exclusives you won’t find in L.A., such as new releases from fashion photogs Inez & Vinoodh and a few one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.
