Outfit Inspiration: A Maxi for all Seasons

Tory Burch’s new Rodeo Drive flagship has been open for a few weeks now, but she didn’t throw her store’s big grand opening fête until the company had worked out all the kinks — and she had her brand new exclusive Rodeo Drive collection ready. The store was filled with Burch’s latest offerings as well as Hollywood’s pretty young things, including actresses from television and film that looked genuinely happy to be clad in head-to-toe Tory for the occasion.

That’s one of the main draws of the brand: anyone can wear it. And though prep and pretty were the thread that connected most of the looks (we’re head-over-metallic-heels in love with Hailee Steinfeld’s mod-meets-boho shift dress) there was one girl that stood out from the rest. Michelle Trachtenberg’s blend of good girl maxi with grunge goddess moto jacket was our pick for most original and most enviable.

While most of the attendees kept things short and sweet (we are having unseasonably warm weather here on the West Coast), Trachtenberg’s outfit was the perfect combination of feminine and fierce. And while we’re not quite sure what to think about her Angelina leg pose, we do know that we’ll definitely be putting that floral motorcycle jacket (the latest Tory Burch collection was inspired by impressionist paintings of gardens and flowers) into our wardrobes.

We love the combination of Trachtenberg’s soft, flowing maxi with the more hard-edged feel of the motorcycle jacket, so we’re giving you the building blocks to get that look yourself. It’s the perfect outfit for work or play — and it’ll sure to get you noticed when you’re out after sundown among the throngs of miniskirted bar hoppers.

You might already have a great maxi dress in your closet, and that’s great. Pull it out of storage, weather permitting, and you’ll be one step closer to grabbing the Gossip Girl star’s look. If you’re on the hunt for a major maxi, however, we spied the Tbags Los Angeles Print Tiered Maxi Dress ($198). It’s got a great allover print, just like Trachtenberg’s Tory Burch maxi dress, but its darker colors make it more suitable for winter wear. It also does away with the slit, so if it’s really cold out, you can still wear a pair of tights underneath to keep warm. This dress will serve you well all year long. Wear it with a jacket in the wintertime and come spring, throw on a light cardigan. Summer’s heat will let you wear it all on its own — proving just how versatile a great maxi dress can be.

1. While you’ll be hard pressed to find a hand-painted floral motorcycle jacket, we do like the simplicity of the BCBG Boe Moto Jacket ($268). While it doesn’t have flowers printed on it, it is made of a floral jacquard, giving this simple-looking motorcycle jacket a little something special. You can definitely wear white in the winter, so don’t fear that you’re getting another summer-only piece.

2. For a little piece of Tory Burch, put on the Solid Perfume Pendant Necklace ($150). You’re getting a bit of the old — solid perfume — and a bit of the new — Tory’s new beauty and fragrance line. The pendant has classic Tory Burch detailing, such as her signature gilt latticework and lets you dab on a little bit of her fragrance while you’re on the go.

3. Michelle Trachtenberg paired her maxi with simple strapped sandals, and we think that’s a perfect combination. The Zara Leather High Heel Sandal ($69) is a simple, sleek shoe that’ll go with anything from maxi dresses to skinny jeans.

4. If you feel like flowing maxis don’t give you any shape, cinch in your waist with a big, bold belt. The Club Monaco Sharon Belt ($49) is made of soft, supple suede and will give shape to anything you add it to.

5. After seeing totes, satchels and clutches in hand at the event, it was great to see Michelle holding a ladylike shoulder bag. With som many complicated purses and loud bags out, it’s a fresh way to carry your essentials. The Kate Spade New York Alouette Grand Parade Handbag ($298) isn’t the most versatile choice, but sometimes — and for some occasions — you just need something extra sparkly and extra special.
