Outfit Inspiration: A New Way to Wear the Boyfriend Sweater

Madewell Fall 2013

Madewell Fall 2013

It’s finally time to stow away your swimsuits, store your shorts and bring out the nubby knits, chunky sweaters and layering pieces for fall. While the temps are still hovering steady at 80° here in Southern California, we’ve downed enough pumpkin spice to give up on the summer heat and embrace whatever fall has in store for us. It’s October, after all, so we don’t feel right reaching for our breezy tunics anymore.

The team at Fashion Trends Daily is presenting a new feature, Outfit Inspiration, which will highlight a piece you might already be wearing (or hoping to snag this season) and show you a not-so-typical way to wear it. For our first installment, we’re tackling a fall standby: the boyfriend sweater. You’re probably wearing yours with a go-to pair of skinny jeans, and while we’re not saying to forgo your dungarees, let’s ditch the denim for now for a more luxe take on this season’s slouch.

Your slouchy, lived-in boyfriend sweater can be from an actual boyfriend, but if your guy’s more into sweatshirts with sports logos than cashmere blends, we say snag your own. Free People’s known for making some of the coziest around, and the Shaggy Knit Sweater ($98) has the perfect combo of off-the-shoulder shrug and visual interest thanks to its unique nubby knit. Flash some shoulder or wear it so it dips down in the front — we’re even keen on wearing it differently throughout the day — just don’t go full on boyfriend by pairing it with loose boyfriend jeans and oxfords. Tone down the loose shape and add some super-feminine touches for a look that’ll take you from away from the usual desk-to-dinner grind and right into parties and land you ready for parties and more.

1. Shimmy into the Club Monaco Tasha Faux Leather Legging ($149.50) to offset the boxy shape of the sweater. Vegan leather panels give you a touch of Sons of Anarchy while the deep olive color doesn’t scream motorcycle gang. It’s a touch-chic piece you’ll wear with everything. Our EIC Michelle Dalton Tyree has been spotted sporting the black-on-black colorway, but she’s been eyeing the new bordeaux hue for this fall.

2. Opt for a cross-body bag to break up the shape of the sweater. We’ve fallen hard for the mixed media trend that was spotted at New York Fashion Week, and a budget-friendly buy is the Banana Republic Laurel Exotic Crossbody Satchel ($150). While the leggings are decidedly faux, this bag is the real deal: genuine leather and real haircalf.

3. Bring some interest to your neckline, which will be on full display, with the J. Crew Pear necklace ($150). It’s got the perfect mix of high glam with a wink of kitsch.

4. Top if all off with the Club Monaco Patricia ($98.50), which is a godsend for bad hair days and to up your fashion game. Everyone can pull off a hat, but the trick is to wear it like you mean it. Just throw it on and you’re set to shine in this masterful mix of jewel tones.
